Utah Mammoth and Vegas Golden Knights Round 1 Stanley Cup Playoffs Local Broadcast in Phoenix

So apparently with Utah Mammoth playing the Vegas Golden Knights in the Round 1 Stanley Cup Playoffs tonight, Tuesday, and Friday, KASW The Spot Arizona 61 is broadcasting the Utah Mammoth produced feed and KNXV Antenna TV 15.2 is broadcasting the Scripps Sports produced Vegas Golden Knights feed.

Scripps has rights to both feeds, but I didn't know 61 was airing the ex-Coyotes' broadcast. When I was looking for the game, I only saw the pregame show on 15.2, so that's what I stuck with. It also aired on ESPN.

It would make more sense if the Golden Knights were on 61 and the Mammoth relegated to the subchannel.

My listing service (OnTV) didn't have the game listed until some time Sunday. I thought this was weird because both teams are in the Phoenix market. There was also some discrepancies with the listing on the NHL site as well.

At any rate, the first two periods were typical playoff hockey but the "CoyMoths" fell apart in the third. They are going to have to put together a full 60 minutes if they want to advance to the next round.

I’m cheering for the Golden Knights because of their coach Torts!

One fascinating thing about the NHL; the coaches seem to revolve around the league but it is rare when a new coach gets the gig.

Personally, I don't like Torts. I disagree with his coaching methods and don't think he treats his players with the consideration most deserve. It's very easy to be a hard-ass but it isn't necessarily getting the best out of the talent.

It probably won't matter because I don't see the GVK going much beyond the next round. If the Mammoth hadn't had multiple failures trying to keep their crease clear the VGK would be playing golf right now. Too bad too because the Mammoth wasted a beautiful playoff effort by their primary goalie.

the ex-Coyotes are dead to me.
The NHL considers the Utah Mammoth to be a 2024 expansion team, albeit stocked with the former Coyotes hockey operations staff. The Coyotes franchise and its team history is technically dormant, awaiting a future revival in Arizona, which is likely a long way off.

The NHL should separate out the predecessor Winnipeg Jets 1.0 1972-96 history from the Coyotes and award it to the current Jets franchise.

No matter what the NHL "considers" the Mammoth were created lock, stock and barrel from the Coyotes organization. Coaches, players and aux staff. The only major difference at the time of transfer was their ownership which was a huge improvement from the constant upheaval in Arizona. From their onset the Coyotes were doomed to fail.

File that under "Never." Most of the NHL fan base in metro Phoenix is in the Southeast Valley (Mesa, Gilbert, Queen Creek, Apache Junction), where retired Midwesterners go. The league wants to be in or near Scottsdale, where the money is. Scottsdale has shut them down twice, and Tempe once.

I agree. If it weren't for Bobby Hull leaving the Blackhawks for the then-WHA Jets, that league wouldn't have lasted as long as it did. He had nothing to do with the Coyotes.

I'm wondering will Scottsdale reconsider, since Phoenix is getting the new Cardinals practice facility at Scottsdale road and Loop 101 Pima Freeway? However, looking at Google Maps, I don't see enough space to plop an NHL-level stadium in Scottsdale's Grayhawk area on the East side of Scottsdale road and North of the 101.

The NFL is a license to print money. Money that comes from the "proper" sources (read: wealthy and/or corporate).

Hockey is a blue-collar sport, which is poison to Snobsdale. They rejected the Los Arcos Mall site that ASU took over 25 years ago, and a site that was technically in Phoenix a few years back. Those snob-sisters want nothing to do with a sport that attracts the working class.

This seems like a very provincial argument. Most of the hockey teams are downtown in the middle of the city, not in suburban neighborhoods.

Of course these are cities that have an exciting downtown culture that attracts both locals and tourists. Perhaps Phoenix is not that kind of place.

The Utah Mammoth play in the Delta Center, located in the center of downtown Salt Lake City. They share the venue with the Utah Jazz.

Where do the Vegas Golden Knights play? On the strip near all the big hotels and casinos. Not in some suburban neighborhood.

And if the Coyotes had made their home in the old Madhouse on McDowell the same might have happened here. Despite being a minor league team the Roadrunners drew nice crowds as members of several different minor leagues. So then the Coyotes ownership plopped the team down on the far west side in the middle of soccer country. It was virtually impossible to leave work at 5PM and make it to that arena by the time the puck dropped - and you had a miserable ride both before and after the game (and mostly on weeknights which prevented parents from bringing their younger kids - something you see in spades in the Delta Center).

SEG (Mammoth ownership group) have made significant improvements to the Delta Center and also built a state of the art practice facility. Their game production is way beyond what the poor Coyotes experienced. A lesson could be learned here. Interviews with previous Coyote players have all been very positive about the move and the city has gotten behind the team much like ASU used to be here.

Hockey could work in Phoenix and Salt Lake City has shown us what it takes. I have faint hope that it will happen in my lifetime however.

The same owners of the Jazz own the Utah hockey team. Hope the Jazz can be a good team like the Mamith were this season.

No way the NHL was going to put the Coyotes in an old arena like the Vet.

The 1974-77 incarnation of the Roadrunners played in the WHA which was a major league rival to the NHL.

The Vet could have been updated or torn down and rebuilt completely. The location was the important feature. Complete loss of vision here.

The WHA was never a direct rival to the NHL. That entire league had a few teams and about a dozen marquee players (Bobby Hull being one example). They were barely one notch above an NHL farm team.
