left out of the action with this.

Nope, not 'Survivor'. The voters there would be the other contestants (except for the "fan favorite" at the very end of the season).

I believe "American Idol" and the other trash music offerings actually have the viewers voting thus ensuring a popularity contest vs a talent competition.

All true. But face it, it's not about serving all of the audience; it's about serving that part of the audience that will bring in the most potential profit. There will always be a certain percentage of potential viewers deemed unimportant.

Otherwise, college football bowl games would still be on broadcast TV.
