Vintage Jones Aircheck: 2 March 2004 (WJSJ-WSJF) Jacksonville-St. Augustine, FL

Today's Vintage Jones aircheck comes from affiliate WJSJ, which served the Jacksonville, FL area. This was recorded on 2 March 2004, and runs over 70 minutes. The file is 192/44.1 and can be found at this link:

I just love the JRN airchecks. You have so many of them...and still more to come, that I am thankful for them. I never lived in a JRN market (closest to Seattle was KZAL Manson, or KUJJ Weston OR) but the variety of music on JRN (with Steve Michaels/Hibbard running it) rivals KOAZ in ABQ today. JRN was no BA/Allen Kepler at all. I've heard Kenny G all right, but fewer songs than let's say, Richard Elliot or Walter Beasley. And no "Songbird" noise to deal with in any of these airchecks.
Once again, you rock Paul! Thanks once again for more of "Jacksonville's Smooth Jazz"!

There were a lot of different artists on that format, a lot of ones I'd never heard of. Very little Kenny G, if I remember correctly -- a lot a lot of guitar and sax players.

I have listened to 80% of Paul's airchecks, and have only found 8 or 9 Kenny G songs. No "Songbird," no "Going Home" either. JRN spun "The Way You Move" with Earth Wind and Fire quite a bit after 2004, that also had Kenny G doing sax. Lots of Chuck Loeb, Walter Beasley, Brian Culbertson, Brian Bromberg, Gregg Karukas, and Eric Marienthal. Rarer songs I've heard include ones from Rob Mullins (Japanese Girl from 1988), Thom Rotella, and Tim Weisberg ("Castaways," from 1990). Jones had quite the variety back then, especially in the older days.

There was a two man guitar group from England that was used a lot in their smooth jazz format in the early 2000's. Can't remember their name. Two acoustic guitar dudes. They added them frequently.

A little bit of Ottmar also, if memory serves.

That was Acoustic Alchemy. They have been around since the 1980s.

Yeah, Acoustic Alchemy. That was them. Very popular on the Jones smooth jazz format. I think they put their songs on at least half of their updates.

I'm loving these airchecks too. Was listening to one a couple of days ago and one of the first songs I heard in that one was a rare track from Kilauea called "The Love Goddess". Major props just for that song.

If you go to Paul's airchecks and download WSSJ-92.3 from 2/4/04, you'll hear "Pirate's Cove" by Kilauea, a 1991 cut. Great tune. Until listening to these airchecks, I had never heard the song before. There are some VERY rare 80s and early 90s cuts on the old KZSP airchecks, including one with an old Rob Mullins cut, and another from Tim Weisberg. I listened to KWJZ for many years when I lived in Seattle, and never did I hear Rob Mullins, hardly any Kilauea if that, and no Tim Weisberg.

While not a radio station, WFMZ (an independent TV station based out of Allentown, PA) has their own weather channel that plays lots of great smooth jazz (and some new age) songs from the 70s through today during their local forecasts - many of which I've heard on these airchecks. Have heard lots of rare tunes from artists including Kilauea, Rob Mullins, John Jarvis, Tim Heintz, and Alexander Zonjic on there, lots of independent artists, and LOTS of Acoustic Alchemy. Only con is that they air ads over the music, but they're usually at most a minute long. Here's a link to the livestream of the channel if you'd like to check it out:
