Vintage Jones Aircheck: 23 August 2008 (KMGK Glenwood, MN)

While there were a few larger cities that the Jones Smooth Jazz network exsted (Jacksonville, FL comes to mind), many of their affiliates were in smaller towns. One such affiliate was KMGK Glenwood, MN ("Smooth Magic 107.1"). The town is 130 miles NW of Minneapolis and has about 2500 inhabitants.

My interest in all of these airchecks has been about the music, but I have enjoyed some of the local commercial breaks some of these affiliates have. The local breaks have announcers who clearly come from Minnesota, or have lived there a long time to absorb the accent from that part of the country.

Before Jones closed their format down, KMGK changed their format, but kept the "Smooth Magic" slogan. The programming switched to and is remains a quirky mix of Soft AC and Oldies. Like many small town stations, they cover local sports and news as well.

I rolled tape on KMGK before the format change, and it is the first time I have uploaded and shared airchecks from this particular affiliate. Here are several hours of the station from 23 August 2008. The files are 192/44.1 and available at this folder link:

More?! Wow! Thanks Paul. Loved hearing David Washington...I haven't heard his soft DJ voice in many years since WSJW 92.7 was on the air in Starview, PA. Great music in that mix including Pamela Williams' "Afterglow" and "The Maiden and the Warrior" with Russ Freeman and Craig Chaquico. However it seemed that JRN was starting to show more Motown R&B before ceasing operations. A lot more Stevie Wonder than the older JRN 'checks.
