Birmingham W222BK 92.3 Birmingham City of license move to Chelsea

I heard W222BK 92.3 tonight here in south Calera. I had to do some "receiver gymnastics" with this C.Crane unit of mine to null out WLWI-FM Montgomery on the same frequency in order to receive the signal. I am 15 miles from the transmitter and I haven't ever received W222BK here in Calera (only when I'm in the Pelham and Alabaster areas) so I figured the station must be broadcasting from their new facilities. I just checked the TOH ID and it is now given as "WENN, Birmingham, W222BK, Chelsea").

A License to Cover was filed today, 6/17 for the new facilities but W222BK is stated as rebroadcasting WPYA, not WENN. I know WPYA HD2 has been originating Birmingham Mountain Radio to feed 107.3 (W297BF) but to my knowledge WPYA doesn't have an HD3 channel. No way to confirm here bc our car stereo is iffy receiving HD broadcasts in south Shelby county. I am unable to receive any of WPYA'S HD subchannels this afternoon.

I looked through my contacts but I don't have anyone that is actually closer to Birmingham with an HD radio. I guess if you ever find yourself on the other side of Double Oak Mountain you could check then, I think the HD should at least work up to that area. It's always been my experience that HD3 and HD4 channels cut out waaaay earlier than the HD and HD2 channels.

My guess is they're just copy/pasting an old retrans document. I think if it was an HD subchannel it'd be mentioned in the documentation.

Thank you all for the Birmingham updates. As you know, it is a fascinating place, and features a ridge with towers right in town. Best wishes to everyone in Birmingham.

I was able to receive WPYA's HD subchannels a few miles away from my house, but all I heard was their usual HD1 and HD2. I will check and see if there are any other HD subchannels for 97.3 when I'm in the area you mentioned.

@tomservo I missed this earlier when the sale of WPYA was announced. Summit Media did finally file a change of originating station for W222BK to correctly reflect it as WENN-AM. This was done on 7/10, the same day the WPYA license transfer was filed.
