Walker, Globe: Touch 106's Clemons walks across U.S. to promote low power radio

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/02/27/tuning_in_to_his_mission/

Charles Clemons of Touch 106 will be walking across the country to promote the cause of low power radio

>>While his admirers believe he is striking an important blow for equal access to the media, detractors point out that the place happens to be illegal.

He has a supporter in the mayor, who feels radio is unfair. ("That really, you know, fries my nose,"
as he would say in one of his sound bites on Howie's show)

The likes of Clemons hope that the Obama administration will help further the cause of low power community
radio.

So what's to stop ME from putting an FM on at 106.1 right next to this guy?

(OH, so THAT'S why they do licenses.....D'OH!)

A threat of a $10,000 fine will stop you, but it's just a threat, nothing is done about it. He will just move his frequency or, more likely, find where you live and send a gang to your house.

He should just walk to Newark, NJ and see his friends that run the pirate stations there

LOL

I'll bet he bails before he gets to Worcester.

Exactly--"HEY! You can't do that!"
Well YOU put an illegal station on, so... -must be OK, eh!- :)

So far no raids/confiscation of equipment for them yet (he does owe $17k but has said
that paying that would be an admission of guilt)

btw if the black audience is undeserved in Boston, why doesn't Clear Channel turn 1430 into
soul/black talk, etc. and keep Rumba on 1200?

Day coverage for 1430 http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WXKS&service=AM&status=L&hours=D
and by night they still reach a fairly decent area. I guess they're doing well with Rumba though.

They might do something different with 1430 when 1200 finally goes to full-power from the Newton site, since the signals will then cover redundant areas.

However, 1430 is very weak in Boston's urban neighborhoods at night. That direction is more or less in their nighttime null. If skywave from the co-channel stations in NY, NJ, etc... is strong, WXKS 1430 can be unlistenable at night in that area.

Gotta agree with Eli. The 5 kW ND day signal is good, but the 1 kW night signal...forget it. 1430 needs aonther stick or 2 for 5 kW at nignt.
