Let me get back to the theme of this blog, with a clearing of thoughts.
First...no I am not buying or interested in buying WHIN. I plan to retire sometime,
not take on additional headaces.
Secondly, or maybe it should be first (I don't believe there's such a word as firstly) Jack
Williams is an astute businessman who would not risk the ire of the FCC by cranking up power
on Friday nights or any other time. He has built a reputation through the years of honor and
probity (look it up) that other business people should strive for. He also has another business
that will provide him a good retirement and really doesn't need the headaches of radio. But like a lot
of us ole-timers he still enjoyes radio. I think it would be fun to work with him again. He's from the
old school where you have a good time....and get it done.....the right way. And since I've known him more
than 30 years, as my good friend Plaster would say, "you can book it"
I've only know his partner Skip for 10 or 15 years, but like Jack, I don't think he would work with
a dishonest person.
Now........next subject....
Buddy,
I seem to recall that Jack offered us to buy WHIN a while back. My mother and I have the money to pay them what they wanted, but we absolutely have had no intrest in it. I'm like Jack, I've lost some intrest in radio as a business (
disclaimer: WMRO IS NOT FOR SALE). At 45, I'm already having health issues and I'm like Jack, just want to retire, play radio and have fun.
Last week, I hung around WVOL some with John Heidelburg. WVOL was my first "real job" in radio and I just walk around the building with my wife and recalling old memories of being on the air over there. My dad would stop by and sit in with me. Sam Howard that owned WVOL at one time, was good friends with my parents, so that's how I ended up over there working. John told me to come by anytime because I was a part of WVOL's history, and I'm happy he said that to me.
The reason why WMRO is not for sale is because me and my late dad rebuilt that station and it more of a sentimental thing to me than a dreadful burdon. I play the music I like (AC) and 80's Pop, the music my wife (Leslie) and I listen to when we were younger. My dad would have wanted it that way. Before he died, he encouraged me to change the format to what I wanted, and don't take no B.S. from anybody about it. It's your station and you worked hard for it.
This is why I've told Jack many times I'm NOT WHIN's competition! I'm just off doing my own thing. His competition is himself. He shouldn't get angry at me for mentioning this statement on line here, he should be happy that he has a good neighbor, willing to help him when he needs me and good relative that has a station, just to have fun.
Our family owns a condo in Punta Gorda, FL. (about 20 miles from Ft. Myers) and I'm going to hang out there on Labor Day Weekend. Gonna get out on the boat and do some deep sea fishing & relax!
Oh Buddy, (off of the radio subject for a miunute) this is for both of us. My doctor told me that I should have 1/2 glass of wine with my evening meal. Stay away from the Arbor Mist totally! The wine should be a good brand of marlow, and he said this will reduce Cholesterol build up in the arteries going to the heart. I'm taking his advice and drinking more water orange juice in during the day.
Buddy, if Wayne Akins takes off on a Sunday Afternoon, why not you and Bill come in and play some oldies on WMRO. Get on the air, cut up, get loose and enjoy yourselves. No rules, just come over and have a good ole time. I'll just sit back listen, and enjoy you two talking about the good ole days when I was just a kid listening to you on WKDA and WSM. Just one think, keep ole Bill Buntin straight! No telling what he will do! (HA!)
Life is too short and God and gives up some much time here. Have fun while we are here!
