Was k-92 Roanoke VA, or 107.5 KZL Winston Salem ever dance friendly

I wonder since these are the heritage chrs around here, I wonder if either station ever had a dance friendly past.... I had never been to this area back then to hear them.
 
I don't think 107.5 KZL was ever all that Dance friendly, but its rival in the early 90s, 98.7 Kiss Kiss FM, certainly was. Even songs like "Injected With A Poison" by Praga Khan were in regular rotation.
Greensboro was actually a hotbed for Raves in the mid 90s if I'm not mistaken.
 
hmmmm do I get 98.7 here? I must try it out in the car....
 
I get it,,, but its 98.7 Simon... similar to jack it seems... I must ask others if they remember... I know g-105.1 which I get sometimes was dance heavy in the 90s,,, they played Injected with a poison too.. Unfourtunately my G/F wont remember none of this, but at least she is open minded to new dance, thanks to Lucy Lopez of mimi's Power 96,,, she played a big part in me and Cass hooking up... Long story,. but this was before lucy was at power 96....
 
G-105 wasn't Dance friendly through most of the 90s. It's mostly remembered for being very heavy on Modern Rock, and especially Modern AC hits, in the latter half of the 90s.
 
Yeah 93 on after they were a modern AC rock friendly CHR,,,, maybe some dont remember the 90-92 years,,, but Raleigh used to be a rave haven.. Wish it still was.. Do you remember when Kiss 95.1 was a rock heacy chr as The Edge, in like 94-95,, but was still dance friendly... I dont remember it alot, thats why I ask, but others in the area do.. I can get Kiss 95.1 here pretty decent,, not just for a radio geek, but plenty of kids have Kiss 95.1 as a pre set in their car.
 
Yeah, I think 95.1 first came on the air with a name like Double Q in the early 90s. Then as The Edge, and finally as Kiss 95.1.
I think they became Kiss 95.1 a bit before 106.9 K-Hits Tulsa changed from an Adult leaning CHR/Pop to a Dance friendly CHR.
 
I remember double Q,, it was a rock chr at that time,,,, I heard it on the way from Knoxville to myrtle beach.
 
Hey Guys... Seems like there is a little bit of interest in Carolina Radio. 95 Double Q was an interesting station, but you gotta see how 95QQ started... It was actually born out of what was Kool 95.1. Double Q was born in Oct of 1991 and stunted for a week with different satellite delivered formats from SMN at the time. They stunted with everything from Z Rock to The Heat to NT, but in Oct of 91 CHR returned back to Charlotte as Double Q was born. They launched with 25,000 songs which would take them right up to around Jan of 1992 when the actual jocks were first on air... It was CHR, but they were also trying to cator to the slowly growing alternative market. They also had a mix show called Planet Q, but that would be replaced with a different mix show on Saturday evenings. By the time the summer of 92 rolled around Double Q was pretty much full fledged CHR and slowly heading towards Adult CHR. At the time it was owned by Adams Communications, but in Oct of 1993 it was sold to once again to Pyramid Broadcasting and in Jan 1994 just one week after another Dance friendly station Kiss 102 changed formats 95 Double Q also sang its swan song and The Edge was born. When The Edge was born the station was CHR, but leaned a little more heavy on alternative. As we move to the summer of 1995 106.5 The End was born thus moving The edge more in an alternative route. The edge was no match for The End and around Dec 17th of 95 the slow move back to CHR started taking place which would lay the foundation of what today is Kiss 95.1. As for G 105 I do not remember it being a super dance friendly CHR, but more or less a true straight up CHR who really did awesome in the mid to late 90's as a great Modern AC type station... 98.7 Kiss FM was very dance friendly during it's run as CHR, but it would go the honkey tonk route as well... Another station that I would like to Bring up was 99.9 Kiss FM in Asheville which from 1984 to 1986 was also dance friendly playing a lot of great mixes that a lot of other stations did not touch. Back in the day Kiss could be picked up in 6 states and it was balls to the wall radio... That is how I remember Carolina radio so I hope that helps just a tad... CC1
 
The first record that pops to mind when I think of 99.9 Kiss FM Asheville is Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters". One of the defining Rock records for me in the 90s, and I was happy to hear it on the radio in Asheville at the time.
With regards to G-105, I can't help but think of all the 80s flashbacks they played when they leaned Modern AC in the mid to late 90s. Songs like Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot".
 
Since I did not want to do a long thread another good station that comes to mind that was dance friendly from 1983 till april of 1986 was Z100 in Charlotte... Was a great balence of top 40 music with a lot of those great 12 inch mixes that made the station light years ahead of WROQ and WBCY... CC1
 
Do you remember 99.7 WHTK,,, I could get it at Myrtle beach before the dial got so crowded,, another station was B-100 in Wilmington on 99.9,,, its rhythmic oldies now,,,, WHTK was in Port Royal Island I think,, and fired their signal from Savanah to Myrtle beach.
 
I sure do remember it... WHTK had an awesome signal. I was in the NE part of South Carolina a could pull stations in from VA to FL... Where I lived it was around 900 feet HAAT and I used it to my advantage... I was one of those geek kids that would listen to stations all over the place... B100 was very simular to what Z100 in Charlotte was like... Another great true chr that was pretty dance friendly in the 80's was WANS in Anderson SC, but in 1991 some great person came up with the idea to switch to true AC which really sealed that stations fate... On Feb 14 1991 the birth of Power 93 was born and although it started out straight CHR would move to a very dance friendly format in 93 before switching to country as 93Q in Jan of 95... CC1
 
I remember Power 93 WBBO.. I can get that station here in Hillsville VA up on coonridge road, and airport road until I get into town.. Its an active rock station now AKA The Planet... I wish I could get B-93.7 here,, I have tried to no end to get even a flicker of a signal here.. B-93.7 replaced Power 93.3 WBBO... I remember WANS too,,, it was 98.9,, I barely remember WANS though,,, I was only like 9,,, but I remember hearing stuff like Bananarama-Cruel Summer and Whiney Houston-Im your baby tonight, and Jane Child-Dont wanna fall in love.... I remember 99.9 Kiss FM in Asheville quite well,,, I dont remember it being dance friendly, but I discovered it in like 88, so a few years after they started leaning rock,, WKSF which is now Kiss Country,, I can pick it up really well on I-81 between Bristol and Knoxville,, they have one of the strongest signals in the south... I remember Kiss 102 in Charllote too,,, but I cant remember what they played.. They may have played some dance,, but I always thought it was Urban... Thats one of the few Charllote signals I cant get here, but it dont help that I have a pirate on 101.7...
 
WFBC AS CHR took flight in March of 95. They stunted by reading the whole GSP phonebook. Since I live in IL I don't really listen to them like I did when I lived in the Carolina's. B93.7 was one of the best CHR's I had ever heard and felt it was hands above a lot of other CHR's around the country at the time. As for 99.9 Kiss FM the best years of that station as a CHR went from Sept 18Th 1984 till around the end of 1986 when it was sold. By the time 1987 rolled around Kiss was a different station with the balls to the wall attitude pretty much gone... By the time we got 1988 they were a CHR that also was very heavy on playing classic rock in the mix so you might have heard Bobby Brown followed by Rush or something crazy like that. Kiss 102 was born in Jan of 1988 launching with a weekend of mixes until Beach and Boo took to the airwaves... From 1988 to around 1991 the station was the rage in the Carolina's. They were banging out songs way before any other station was and the energy of the station was top notch. Kiss was a very unique station that seem to fit anywhere they needed. On Nov 8Th 1989 WBCY Charlotte went from Adult CHR to AC allowing Kiss to add some mainstream TOP 40 songs to their list such as Billy Joel, Skid Row, and quite a few others. That was short lived because on Jan 15Th 1990 Gorilla radio was born on 95.1 to give people the feel of what WAPE was doing down in Jacksonville... 1990 Kiss was pretty much on top once again and had a play list very similar to power 96 down in MIA... 107.5 WKZL had an awesome dance-intensive Friday night show a few years ago with JJ Mccain. It was the only dance show you could pick up on a Friday night in central North Carolina. It was big back in 2002, 2003, and into 2004. First time I ever heard as the rush comes by motorcycle ... so from what I remember the show was fairly legit. Mccain was dropped around 2005 and KZL started heading more adult. I'm fairly certain that Mccain's exit ended KZL's dance era.
 
A weekend mixshow doesn't really make a station Dance friendly - it's the music being played in regular rotation that tells you about the character of the station.
 
I agree, with the exception of stations like B-96 that have 2 to 3 dance mix shows in a day, and play a dance song every hour or so....
