Watertown/Kingston All Christmas Music on 103.1 WTOJ

103.1 WTOJ has switched to a classic Christmas format. Has other stations in other markets gone Christmas?

WUMX out of Utica, NY has been Christmas since the beginning of the month. I always thought WTOJ waited until Thanksgiving but maybe Im mistaken.

Hmmmm...on the American side, I've noticed that stations that go all Christmas before Thanksgiving tend to change their format Dec. 26, unless they were simply trying to beat the station down the dial to the Christmas format, respectfully.

Right now, the Buffalo board is reporting that SWING 1270 has gone all "classic Holiday Music".
Interesting... (and they just switched to standards/oldies shortly before...)

Unfortunately nothing has really changed at WTOJ over the years, they have always played the same music. They don't really play much newer CHR since Community Broadcasters already owns CHR WBDR 106.7 which gets much better ratings. Although WTOJ does pretty good as well.

If they were smart, they would try to get some listeners from the Kingston area, especially since the 104.3 signal is no longer AC.

They tried to compete in Kingston in the 90's with repeater WKGG 102.7 only difference was 102.7 had Kingston News and 103.1 had Watertown News. After a year or so 102.7 went Oldies then went silent now WLYK 102.7 the Lake.

The funny thing is, it's ok for a border station to serve Canada from the States, but it's not ok for the competing Canadian stations to be exempt from Can Con or any other rule that may apply, securing the difference between a CRTC regulated station and an FCC regulated one.

Competition is competition, and it should be fair.

CIKR gets decent rating in the Watertown market. That could explain why WOTT put up a new tower closer to Watertown with 25kw in 2009 and have begun mixing in more classic rock.

And even though theres not a whole lot of population there, I find that many people on the US side of the St Lawrence valley listen to Ottawa stations since they blanket the area with some good signals.
