Wave96 to become Adult/Variety Hits as "96.1 Chuck FM"

According to R&R, At 5 PM (Just under an hour from this post), Wave96 will end after 20 years as a rock-centered station and 15 as an alternative station. It will be replaced by the fast-growing Adult/Variety Hits format and will be called "96.1 Chuck FM." Hmm...I wonder if this is an answer to the dramatic drop in ratings released earlier this week. Oh well, R.I.P. Wave96, we hardly knew ye.

Wow. This will definately hurt 100.5, The Bridge and WXLY. Not to mention even Sunny and Q104.5.

Can't say I'm really surprised, especially after the last book...ouch.

Hmmm...I wonder what the businesses who play Wave96 will be like when the hear the intro to Chuck FM. They better be at battle stations. I expect a flood of phone calls at the station, maybe enough to cause a phone crash. And, this thread is gonna be FLOODED with angry folks shortly. So, get out ya popcorn and enjoy the show!

EDIT: The last song of WAVF, "My Wave" by Soundgarden.

EDIT2: The "Charles in Charge" theme will play repeatedly until the top of the hour ID. RIP, Wave 96 1987-2007. Ratings rule the radio industry. And that's the plain and simple fact of life.

End of an era.

I moved to Charleston in early 1998, and they were at the end of a stretch where they were considered one of the most influential alternative stations in the country. They never shied from playing local artists even though they were a touch out of the "alternative" genre (Hootie, Edwin, et al.).

I never cared for the jocks much, but the music and the imaging...for me it will always be the soundtrack for my time in Charleston.

I'm a little sad today.

RIP, WAVF. You were good.

Shameless plug for Charlestonians. You can get WXRY Columbia over the Internet and on mobile devices at mobile.wxryfm.org.

Sorry to hear the Wave went away.

Just heard an ad telling liseners to visit Wave.com
I guess someone forgot to update the computer! :D

You're such an opportunist, Steve. Really. lol

LOL. I know. It's getting lonely in the alternative music field right now. It's The Buzzard, WARQ, possibly WCOO and us.

The guy that programmed that station use to be pd at wlrs up here in louisville ky lance Hale.Poor guy every where he goes the stations get blown up.I don't get it i saw your alls numbers with the wave they for the most part are much better then this piece of crap alt/active wlrs is up here but yet they won't flip it but yet they seem to be flipping your alls station with much better numbers for the most part.Wlrs just got bought.Radio one sold there cluster here so i am praying our piece of trash lrs gets blown up soon!!!Good luck to chuck!!!

Very interesting. I honestly don't think the was the best solution to any sort of ratings crisis, but what do I know. Sad to see Wave go.

It's kinda funny, I was driving into Charleston today; not a trip I make frequently, I'm probably here once a year at most. Anyway, around 6PM I flipped over to WAVF and heard "Mambo No. 5", raised my eyebrows and figured it must have been a bit or something. Anyway, flipped back a few minutes later, "Chasing Cars" went into a liner about ChuckFM. Needless to say I was more than a little confused. Guess I just missed the flip by minutes, would have been cool/weird/sad to actually hear it in real time, not to mention in town...

:'( :'( :'(

Like the rest of you, I'm crying over this. Speaking as someone living in Savannah, ever since WZAT was sold to Cumulus in 1997 and flipped from Alternative to Top 40/Hot AC/whatever the hell format it is this minute, I've always checked 96.1 on the car radio in the hopes I could pick up 96 Wave. More often than not, WAVF came through loud and clear, though the signal could go spotty in some places. It was truly a great station and I will miss it so very much.

WAVF (96 Wave) 1987-2007 R.I.P.

I guess now all of the main markets in SC have Variety Hits....

104.9 Bob - MYB
106.3 Charlie - Greenville
96.1 Chuck - Chucktown
96.7 Steve - Columbia

I wonder if they had 'Chuck' all lined up in case the book was bad? Hey, it was just a guess..

96Wave had a really nice run, but it's still sad to see that they're gone. When I attended college in Charleston (mid 1990s), 96Wave was really the only station in town that was playing new rock music at the height of the alternative music craze. They had a great variety of music and even got some national attention around that time. This was back in the days of Atom Taler, Richard Todd, Holley Anderson, and Uncle Miles Crosby. And, of course, The Critic was there even then....

Which PD then gets credit for "taking the Wave down to where the fishes live"?

From what I had heard through the grapevine, it was the folks higher-up that micro-controlled the Wave's playlists. Although Dave Rossi's decision to play a lot of obscure 1980's alternative albums cuts for a stint probably didn't help.

HOLY BLEEP!!!! What a shame about WAVE... I just left SC and find that WAVE is n o more... Like all the other post with the ratings I guess the writing was on the wall... To bad for all of those who loved the alt format... to bad Steve can't do something down in Chuck Town to revive what wave did so good which was cutting edge music... Not some of the stuff I heard on there as of late, but what made them a big success... CC1

We've tossed around approaching the folks the own WPAL-FM. Not sure that what we are doing in Columbia would be what would work in Charleston, particularly on a sub-par signal.
