Wave96 to become Adult/Variety Hits as "96.1 Chuck FM"

Rossi's mix was pretty good. Then they backslid and started playing more generic crap right before the switch to Chuck. But in its time, Wave was awesome. What I wouldn't give for airchecks.

Onlys pent a short time in SC, But I really enjoyed the wave and thought the pd (lance) was a great guy....what a great station, and seemed to have a great presence downtown and in the college community

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was a station I loved when I was a student there (come to think of it, 20 years ago this past week). This is so sad!!!!

The new 96.1 is actually pretty good, IMO.
Any info on callsign changes? I'd be surprised if they kept the 'WAVF' sign, that's not really tied to anything local (other than the Wave heritage) and has no resemblance to 'Chuck.'

Some of the YouTube videos that Wave had on their website are still available on youtube.com; just enter "WAVF" and "Charleston" in the search engine. They're not airchecks, obviously, but still a lasting link to the old "Wave."

BTW, there's at least one person that's peeved by the format flip--so much so that they took out their frustrations on the station's Wikipedia entry:

Despite much uproar over the change from the long lived, and popular 96Wave, Apex executives have their head too far up their {expletive} to really care about what Charleston wants. Unfortunately for Charleston, and radio everywhere, another station has been lost to the suits. Local listeners are contemplating a grassroots movement to try and persuade the owners to bring back the old format, or better yet, find a group of investors to regain control of this Charleston landmark.

the folks who ran the Linn Martin stations in Charleston who repeatedly got their butts kicked by 96 Wave back in the day were brought into management positions by Apex leadership, and viola history repeats itself, with the Linn Martin stations doing better in the ratings and Wave taking the nose dive. Nice job Chris, props Dean, way to pick a winner to run your cluster.

Isn't there another rock station in Charleston called 98x? Their doing much better in the ratings then Wave did I saw. Now the new format is it anything like 100.5 The Drive?

If I was Apex I would of went after Citadel's z93 Jamz. How about Hot 96. But then again that might hurt their own station B 92 a little. Theirs nothing really else this market needs. It has Urban, 2 Urban AC's, 2 Country, 1 Oldies/Classic Hits, 1 AC, 2 CHR/Pop, 1 Rock, 1 Hot AC, 1 Classic Rock.

How about a Jazz station in Charleston. I think that would work good.

Sorry, just got the headline.

No more Wave 96 in Charleston? Wow, that is some sad, sad news. What a great station! Were they doing that bad? Fort Sumter ought to fire on the management. WAVF was a fantastic station to these traveling ears and brief Palmetto State resident. Very sorry to hear this, hate to see good stations flipped...and flipped to Jack?! Man, that's just insulting.

Heart goes out to good music and radio fans in Charleston.

>I also agree that its time for Apex to take down Citadel's Z93. B92 would be safe since the playlist isn't as Rythmic as it was in the beginning. STAR 99.7 would take the top spot in 12+ if Apex launched an all hip-hop station with little R&B.

>Ken, I believe Charleston had a jazz station on 99.7 before Urban AC STAR 99.7 was born. At one time I heard jazz was on the AM side of the dial in Chucktown.

>What happened to the Chucktown dial switch around??? I thought 96.1 was shifting cities and Magic 101.7 was moving to 107.5???

Charleston needs a Rhythmic format B92 was Close but they have moved to a true CHR/pop format now(guess they needed to do what's best to battle 99SX) "HOT 96.1" would have been a better fit to challenge Z93. I don't think Apex Can do it with Urban, Rhythmic...Maybe

Their website is back up displaying 96 WAVE Charleston's Rock Station, but they're still CHUCK FM. The only mentioning of CHUCK FM (which is in small letters) is the online listening feature.

I just don't think Apex wants to compete their sister station B 92. Sure its a CHR/POP but they play some rhythmic tracks. Then again I don't know. In Charlotte, NC CBS Radio owns both the CHR/POP station KISS 95.1 and the Urban station Power 98 and just to throw in they also own the Urban AC. All three doing well. It would be a second war for Apex and Citiadel.

Apparently, 96.1 Chuck FM will offer its former Alternative format online at http://www.96wave.com.

Yeah, I'm in Charleston and I picked up Graffiti, a magazine owned by Apex Broadcasting. It had this article in it:

---
September 13th - 26th, 2007
The Wave Rides Again
96Wave.com remains the cutting edge for alternative and local music

The Wave never really went away. It was just busy being re-invented. When Apex Broadcasting made the recent announcement of supplanting "Wave" with "Chuck FM" on the radio dial, they never said they were getting rid of a Charleston icon.

Apex always planned to move 96 Wave to a web based technology as a streaming radio station. This allows 96 Wave to fulfill its potential as a real live alternative music station and better serve the local community.

[EDIT]

Go to www.96Wave.com and stream along or you can link through GRAFFITI magazine at www.graffitimagazineonline.com. Tune in and stream on.

It's a better mix than what they had on 96.1 but it's probably going to tank...about the only radio station that was successful in being truly "reborn" on the 'net was 97X (BAM!) in Cincinatti. That station, however, needed about two bailouts to survive.

I think alternative will come back in Charleston either on 95.9 or 100.5...but patience will have to be a virtue in this case.

If Apex cares enough about what the people want, they will give in and put Wave on the killer 101.7 signal. One can only hope!

"What the people want"? If you went based on that (ratings), then any change is a move in the right direction for Apex.

You are making the classic radio mistake - hearing a loud vocal minority and assuming volume means numbers. It doesn't.

The ratings have sucked for a couple years now. And while many (like myself) will decry the move and miss 96 Wave, I can honestly say I miss 96 Wave circa 1998, not circa 2007. And that's just due to the passage of time.
