WAVH BRINGS ADULT HITS TO MOBILE AS “106-5 THE PIRATE”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Release

AUGUST 21, 2006

WAVH BRINGS ADULT HITS TO MOBILE AS “106-5 THE PIRATE”

<Mobile, AL>
Baldwin Broadcasting announced today that it has shifted WAVH-FM/Mobile (Daphne), AL from Oldies to Adult Hits as 106.5 The Pirate. Chuck Redden joins the station as its new General Manager, following a stint at Sunny 105 in Gulf Shores. Longtime Mobile personality Charlie Ocean remains with WAVH as Program Director. Anthony Acampora, formerly Chief Programming Officer of Styles Media, is the station’s consultant.
Owner Barry Wood commented, “Today is an exciting new day for WAVH. We want to thank all of the loyal listeners and advertisers of WAVH who have supported us for over a decade. However, with the marketplace constantly changing, it was time to open a new chapter for WAVH. The Adult Hits format will help us deliver competitive 25-54 ratings and provide even greater value to the advertising community here in the Mobile area.”
106-5 The Pirate features songs by core artists such as the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, U2, R.E.M., Sheryl Crow, Steely Dan, and Matchbox Twenty, among others. The station will feature a wide variety of hit songs – including many that are not available anywhere else on the radio dial in Mobile.

good move. that station never did squat doing oldies. of course they never did it right so it remains to be seen if they do THIS format correctly

They were Top 10 in the last book. What were they not doing right?

You are correct about that. It would seem this format has a much better shot at top 5 25-54 numbers than Oldies. I don't think you can blame them for the Oldies issue - they ahd signal problems and the format is aging.

true

The signal problems were the result of damage sustained during Hurricane Katrina. WAVH is back to full 50 kw now.

Just an update...the Pirate sounds great these days and has a top notch music cycle, and I have hopes that it soundly kicks the rockets butt.
I have always thought Charlie Ocean was one of the most underrated jocks in town...and If I had known him back in the day, I would have hired him in a heartbeat to work for me in Detroit.

The rocket is the most small market sounding piece of junk to come down the line....and has been since Jim Mehanny left and the new cluster PD was hired from the big market of tallahasee??? God, If I hear Chip nelson say one more time " The rocket rush chairman, damm glad to meet ya" or end a zz top song with uh huh huh huh....I think my head will explode.
If they ever dump john boy and billy, it will be a quick death as that is the only thing that gets that station any numbers.

Good luck to the Pirate who is showing itself to be a class act.

Just what is the rationale behind thinking an oldies station will get better 12 plus than 25-54? That makes no sense.

Should WABB-AM flip to Oldies? The move could even be patterned after WASE/Louisville recent transition to WAKY where the station took the identity of the longtime CHR WAKY.
