WAXY 105.9 May 1978 Lee Sherwood Charlie Murdock Kay Clement

Friend of mine worked there in 1974. It was all-live then. Later, he wrote and told me he watched Paul Drew walk in with automation tapes under his arms... and that was that for "WAXY 106." That's okay though because my friend's next stop was WHTZ, New York. It was I who gave "Steve Rivers" a jump-start in this business. I'd found him on a small station in the outskirts of Portland, Maine and convinced him he was way too good for that market. Hearing WGNG/Pawtucket (Providence) was about to go Top 40, I put "Charlie Scott) as he was known then) together with the station's consultant, and that was that.

I never knew why they pulled the plug on the live operation back then. I left WAXY in early 1974 but it was still automated. Certainly RKO General had enough money to keep the live format going. I remember hearing one jock E. Alvin Davis who went on to be a big time consultant. I could never understand his name when he said it. It sounded more like E. Abba Nebus!

About 2 years or so ago, Janet Parschall interviewed Charlie Murdock. It was a fantastic, long interview. It was up on her website for awhile, I don't know if its still there. But you can shoot her an email if you want a copy.
