WAY-FM Louisville changes sister station Shine 105.9 from AC to Talk

Shine 105.9 had been inching away from carrying Today's Christian Music on a 24/7 basis over the past few weeks, and this week it finally went to a full blown Christian-Talk format. There is already a FM Christian Talk station in the market, WFIA, owned by Salem.

This move really doesn't surprise me given how AC-leaning WAY-FM has become (they seem to go through that phase about once a decade), as well as 105.9's limitations in the eastern part of the Louisville market.

I hear ccm on now when I tried their online listening. They may have ccm on all weekend but its late at night so I can be sure. They do not have a schedule listing on their website.

The schedule looks like it's from Moody. The music would probably lean more toward Inspo. It's a good lineup of programs, but this is another decision by WAY-FM I don't understand. But considering K-LOVE is also in Louisville I guess they decided to make a change. At least they didn't go the dollar a holler direction of letting any crackpot on that flashed money in their faces.

As much as I love WAY-FM they have made several dicisions in recent years that I don't understand. They left West TN completely, probably because of K-LOVE's and Air 1's dominance in the area. They backed out of CPs for translators in Jackson and Martin and sold them, and sold their translators in Union City and Dyersburg. Now I can only hear them online or on trips into Nashville or Middle TN.

Looking at the PDF Schedule for shine 105.9 looks like their using Moody as their primary programming source thrown into their local automation.. While it was great they tried CCM with Shine 105.9 the odds were likely against them in the market with WJIE in the market doing CCM already [Plus their own 93.9 leaning towards AC] .. I am sure it was a up hill battle for their experiment [and as we all know radio is a business and if $$$ is not being met sometimes changes have to be made to be good stewards of what God has provided the ministry and I am guessing that was a big part of WAY Media's decision in moving Shine from CCM to INSPO/Talk).

Also previously noted in this thread.. 93.9 WAYI had quite a bit of musical overlap with Shine so those who want their CCM fix can still obtain it from 93.9. Regarding not building out translators or selling them to others.. Without knowing the background my guess is WAY looked at the resources and had a tough decision to make "Are we sure these new signals will self support themselves in today's market???" .. naturally if they put a signal on air and the listeners donations are not there then it's a tough decision..

I agree with what Matt said.

Also, WAY-FM has sold most of their translators nationwide except bigger cities where more young people are so that is there focus. And they also want to focus on new digital platforms through smart phones and computers. At one point they applied for or built those rural translators and then decided to go in another direction. Maybe because of the economy.

You're close, Brian... Social media is the direction.... Some translators will exist.. When they are needed.... Everything Changes.. Kathy Trocolli?

This will give you a better idea what Way would like to acomplish.. as always things are subject to tweaking.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r95DgvSBlo&feature=plcp

I hope God continues to bless WAY-FM's efforts, and I can understand now why they may have had to change formats on 105.9. I just wish translators like were in TN could still be part of their plan.

I had seen that video about WAY-FM's future that Matt posted about a year ago or something.

But the video about the history of WAY-FM from John was new to me and nice to see. I have not seen Skippertthomas before.

The history of WAY-FM video does not say or tag which person Skippertthomas is.

It was good to see Mylon Le Fevre. I like that song and he was one of my favorite singers. I also saw him in concert a couple times.

I hadn't seen the 20th anniversary video before... Great to see the history.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I believe that's him at 3:28 and 7:29. I met him once at the New Song Festival in Kentucky at WAY-FM's booth.

Considering that the 20th anniversary video was from 2007, I'm wondering if WAY-FM plans to do anything for the 25th anniversary, or WAY-FM in Nashville's 20th anniversary this year.

Yes, I was there at the Franklin, TN Factory location, five years back.. I am still a fan and close to Bob, Lloyd and the blessings I had to 'goof ball' and be an original Way-Fm'er in Fort Myers-Naples and Nashville... Eight great years with them.... "Skip"

It was also uphill due to the fact they were putting on programming already available in a large part of their potential listening audience on another station - WFBR 95.3. Certainly, their signal was stronger than WFBR, but a considerable chunk of the Louisville area was already being covered by WFBR.

This change will hopefully be beneficial to both stations and provide different niches for reaching people in this market with unique programming for each vs. duplication and overlap.

(Thanks for the link on this, Matt)
