WBAP DUMPS OUT OF PAUL HARVEY FRANCHISE

Mark Davis just announced that his show will get 10 minutes of the Paul Harvey 10:45-11AM slot, with Mike Huckabee's mid-day report taking the last 5 mins. Pretty sad to see the franchise come to an end, but what can you do? Chapman's been a decent fill-in, but could that still parlay into a permanent replacement role? (Not to be carried on WBAP, obviously, but elsewhere?) I think back to when front-page humor columnist Paul Crume of the Dallas Morning News died, and the paper carried a "best of" for quite a while thereafter. Perhaps something similar could be done for Harvey? Sheesh, there's only 58 years of material to choose from.

RIP, Mr. Harvey. We'll do a salute this Sunday to Paul on "The Hi-Fi Club."

Sadly, radio isn't what it used to be. Once legendary broadcasters were revered, but not anymore. They are simply swept under the rug and quickly forgotten, by the bean counters.

I don't think anybody wants to forget him. You just have to move along after a death.

Too bad Paul Harvey Jr. couldn't fill his dad's shoes.

Not my call to make, but wow, 59 years on the air at WBAP (or variations thereof...WBAP/WFAA-570,) including a year doing Thursday nights in 1950 (nationally, for ABC, to replace Robert Montgomery's show,) before Harvey started his national morning show.

Sure, whatever ABC chooses to do with the time, it won't be the same. But from that article in the NY Daily News, ABC does indeed plan to do SOMETHING...I mean, you don't just throw away 900 affiliates. Perhaps a 'best of' to run the next year or so, until an 'heir apparent' is put in place...perhaps complemented by PH Jr and Ron? Huckabee's already got his own deal with ABC, and I'm sure the first instinct for ABC is to push those 900 affiliates into the Huckabee fold, but, like with WBAP, Huck's already on the schedule.

But you don't just waste all that goodwill established over that many years...if 'Law and Order' Thompson wasn't so politically polarizing, he's got that folksy kind of delivery. Joe Holstead was a great fill-in, and I'm sure Porter Randall would have been, too...but both those guys are dead. Who's tomorrow's great storyteller? Is there one? Will the public ever embrace another? Or is this just something to write off to memories of yesteryear?

It was always my understanding that Paul Harvey Jr was not interested in taking over for his dad. I thought Jr. was very good. Gil Gross was my other favorite substitute.

Well let me tell you kiddies I was pretty pissed this morning!

I heard the tribute to The Rest of The Story yesterday on WBAP. Before that Gill filled in on the Noon report saying that they would be doing this week as a tribute. I caught Monday's and then I hear from Davis this morning that they are dumping the whole thing and bringing on Huckabee!

Ok, I KNOW the man is dead but Christ On A Bike! 24 million people across 900 stations need to grieve!

I listened to Huck's 5 minute deal. I really like the guy but he sucked. Now mind you I don't think it was all his fault. Have the hell can you create a presence and do it in FIVE MINUTES! He one or two to commercials. With 15 at least ol Harvey got a few damn good sixties in there! After that I didn't even listen for the rest of the story tonight.

I had a chat with the news guy over at KAND-AM. It may have been David Yates but he sounded older. We talk the dissing at WBAP and asked if they were still carrying Paul. HE said yes. I tuned in and Gill was giving a background on how Paul handled ads.

Sooooooooooo...

If you can pick up KAND on 1340 you can listen to Gill continue with the tribute. I thought they were streaming in the net. I went to their web site and domain is down due to non payment!

And speaking of sites, what about paulharvey.com???

No archives to listen to??? What about the 1 hr tribute Gill did Saturday night? Able to listen again on ph.com? Or maybe purchase on cassette or CD like ABC News Perspective?

I just looked over and they have a link to Gill's shows!

Monday and Tuesday are up and running!

Also what day WAS his last broadcast? I think Chapman has been on for the last 2 weeks? Anybody got it?

Be nice if Ph.com would have it available.

I don't see why TROTS (Ohhhh...There's a bad acronym! ;D) could be sold on CD or even kept in Syndication with Paul repeats or Paul Jr. But I don't see how they can keep it going with a new host. Then again, he did replace Montgomery for all these years.

I think Thompson was the CLOSEST to Paul. And his copy about Global Warming being detected on other planets he read with the instrumental from the song "Fever" was just classic! But now he's got his own gig at WWON. Huckabee MIGHT be able to do it. But he SURE AS HELL is gonna need more then FIVE MINUTES!

Yeah, I felt pretty weird and, well, even GUILTY, giving a traffic report at 10:45 today. That was Paul's Time, and I'm talking right over the point when the "...stand by for NEWS" is normally played...so I guess I got the distinction(?) of disrupting a 58-year habit for folks. I humbly apologize. :(

The concept of a 15 minute 'free-form' news and comment show is something from a bye-gone era. The only reason it's lasted this long is because of the stature of Paul Harvey. My guess is no matter how good the new guy/gal is, the affiliates won't bite because it's not Harvey.

And that era has been gone for several decades now. Harvey hung on for a long time as the last remnant.

The end of Lowell Thomas' nightly broadcast back in the 70's can otherwise be seen as the close of that news genre.

I wish WBAP would just dump the whole news and commentary segment and let Mark start at 8am and go till 11am. Huckabee just doesn't have the style, charisma, or flare for this.

R.I.P. Mr. Harvey your are an Icon and a Legend in broadcasting.

We forgive you, Mike! It's not your fault!

Today's prize for hitting the nail on the head goes to johnsummers.

Talk shows, for the most part, are contained in one-hour segments. Sometimes three hours -- sometimes four hours.

Having 15 minutes carved out of a local or national show has been a bee in N/T programmers' bonnets for quite some time.

If not for the iconic status of Paul Harvey and the power of his brand, this concept would have been kicked to the curb many years ago.

Paul Harvey was perhaps the most significant American broadcaster of all time.

But with his passing, it's time to move on.

i think JR. could do a fine job with the show but so far he is just "mailing it in"... content is lacking.. during the election cycle and the inauguration of mr obama NOT ONE mention of anything current in Paul Harvey Jr's so called "newscast'..
he is reading magazine articles, interesting "filler" but no REAL news here kids. i'm not sure JR. wants to really take over the franchise.

John Summers is correct. End of an era. Close the last chapter of a very good book. NOBODY can or will ever replace the style, the content or the man himself. Time to look to new alternatives-and they are out there.
