WBEN Celebrating Sandy Beach's 50 Anniversary In Radio On Friday

https://t.e2ma.net/message/6fw1jf/eu47b9
Scroll down to the end for the details.

From the release:
"WBEN and Sandy will welcome some special guests and members of the local media in-studio during Friday's edition of The Sandy Beach Show from 9am-noon ET. In-studio guests will include fellow market legends Joey Reynolds, Danny Neaverth and Stan Roberts, and probably some surprises. A reception will be held following the conclusion of the show, where Sandy will be available for interviews with confirmed media."

I think he was still in Massachusetts in the early 60s before moving on to Hartford. He also spent time here in Erie, PA at WJET 1400 from 1974-1977, bringing Barney Luv (Tom Barney) along for nights.

What was the reason he'd leave Buffalo to come to Erie back then? $$$ ?

They were celebrating the 50th anniversary of Sandy's arrival in Buffalo.

Sandy went to WJET in Erie (which was a leading AM at the time) as Program Director. Jeff Kaye left WKBW in '74, and I heard that Sandy was denied that position at 'KB in favor of Bob Harper. Erie was close enough to Buffalo for his family to avoid pulling up stakes until he settled into something more permanent, and he got a chance to add PD to his resume.

In the period from 1974 to 1984, besides Barney, there were numerous other Buffalo area personalities that made their way to Erie. At least I think they were Buffalo area.

Much of the discussion on the program was the grandeur of WKBW between July 4, 1958 and perhaps the mid 1970s. An obvious question is why Entercom, which also owns WBEN, decided to let this facility deteriorate to near total oblivion. Also, an obvious question for Mr. Beach is what prompted him to switch from a very successful purveyor of music to an exponent of the political far right. Not a word was said about Beach's present position.

1. It is an AM.
2. It is an AM at the high end of the dial.
3. Entercom is already doing talk on WBEN. They are doing Sports on WGR (as well as WWKB). The market is too small for all news. There are no other viable AM formats left.
4. Of Entercom's three AMs in the market, 1520 has slightly less daytime signal.

5. Entercom already tried personality radio on 1520 back in 2003 and while listeners loved it it couldn't make revenue targets (something the original questioner may know something about).

I remember he was hired for evenings at WGR(replacing Randy Michaels) but at the last minute decided to accept the PD position at WJET. Shane, of course, wound up getting the GR gig.

Did not live in Buffalo in the '70s but when I visited I listened to a lot of radio. Loved listening to SHANE! In fact WKBW was my station in the '60's but WGR would have been my station in the '70's.
