WBPM Re-launches as The Biggest Hits of All Time.

As I rolled back into Hyde Park tonight after a weekend away I noticed WBPM is now calling itself the all-new WBPM with The Biggest Hits of All Time. I only listened briefly so I can’t comment on how much the music has changed, however it sounded like they tweaked the processing as well. Maybe I got to much sun this weekend but the sound appeared different, ‘brighter’ or louder. The songs I heard were familiar WBPM fare.

That's a big move for the station. I remember when it first started back around 2007 as "Classic Hits 92.9", it was okay station, but it got leaned to a more classic rock edgy format kinda like it was going to compete with WPDH, but when WBWZ pulled the plug on "Star" it went to a rock format back in March, but prior to that, "Fox Oldies" went on the air at 98.9 last year, but as of now, the station is renamed "The Biggest Hits of All Time", just like CBS-FM. I hope this station is now going to compete with "Fox Oldies", because "Fox Oldies" plays too much pre-Beatles (1955-63) songs mixed with others from 1964 through 1975. As for WBPM, they got a new logo, but here is a link to check that out.

WBPM has rediscovered sixties music, playing hits by such groups as The Beach Boys, Four Seasons and The Beatles. It seems like they want to compete with WGNY, which has been quite successful. One thing in 92.9 WBPM’s favor they mix in some eighty’s music and drop the really old stuff WGNY sometimes has an excess of.Their music has a bit move of an edge to it than WGNY. It will be interesting to see how having two oldies err Biggest Hits stations in the Poughkeepsie market will play out.

IMHO--in the few years that the oldies format was up for grabs here in the HV, BPM should have grabbed that niche and ran with it, but they didn't, and in the cesspool they will stay. 'GNY's doing a great job with the oldies. I'm sure there will be the usual repitition with BPM; I don't think anyone over at Pamal has the stones to break that noose. ALSO--seems like the Title "oldies" isn't a dirty word like it was-- at least one station in albany uses the oldies word, as Fox does here. Whats the jock (or vt) lineup over at BPM??? Miller still on morning drive???

oldies4ever ;D

The Oldies format in the Mid-Hudson Valley was up for grabs because Pamal flipped WBPM away from it when they bought the station.
Yes Bob Miller is doing a live Morning show, JJ Carter (WSPK’s Skywalker) VT mid-days, and Randy Turner Does PM drive

Oldies IS a dirty word by and large, unless you want the big $ to run for hills. The Fox is still too old musically. BPM seems to have the direction right, will it work, remains to be seen. BPM switched away because it had a bigger mission for a while; denting PDH's ratings - Radio Chess 101.

Yet Clear Channel in Albany decided to rebrand 98.3 WTRY to "Oldies 98.3"... (which is also a branding they previously used for years before I think 2006) :)

Clear Channel’s WZCR, Hudson, NY recently switched from crusin’ 93.5 to oldies 93.5. Perhaps some sponsors are learning that we older listeners are not to be ignored. We still have plenty of spending power and baby boomers represent a considerable part of the population. The notion that oldies are the kiss of death is itself old.

Ya hit it on the head, MHR----us grey hairs have and do have some $$ left after paying taxes and ga$oline....I cann't figure out why they havent Jettisoned Randy Turnip yet...he's so obnoxious , predictible, and His voice sounds like somebody scratching their nails across a chalkboard....The book will tell all, and so far it has determined that BPM will stay in the bottom of the dumpster...more commentary???

I just don't get it. I would think a baby boomer would have a lot more disposable income than a college student yet commercial radio panders to the latter.
The bottom line is fifties songs are great when you play a real variety. It was a decade with so many styles from rockabilly to rhythm and blues to pop.

This was a good move for 92.9 WBPM. I hear a nice blend of up tempo 60's 70's and 80's tunes similar to CBS-FM and other stations like it around the country. This format was sorely needed in the Mid Hudson Valley. Finally something fun to listen to!

Missing the point. It's not mostly about the money. Radio is about branding, and a college student is much more impressionable than a baby boomer.
