"WBZ 700 Legends Greatest Music Of All Time"

As I mentioned before, WTUB's "new calls", WWBZ, were a sly way of getting heritage calls on what had been WTUB 700 Orange-Athol. Now they have a new format, too:

The Legends "WBZ"... Yes. http://www.700wbz.com "Greatest Music of All Time"

Fybush says 9 am launch for new format on WFNX 99.9

So do they. Early this morning, "Legends 700 WBZ" and 99.9 were simulcasting a loop of construction sound effects, punctuated by the announcement that they were "building two new radio stations." Stop me if you heard that before -- oops, too late. The promo also said the new 700 would debut at 7:00 am and the FM at 9 am. At 7, the simulcast stopped, the promo continued on 99.9 (FM only version), and the AM went to 50s and 60s Top-40 oldies with some country oldies in the mix. Also, old sounding W (clap) BZ jingles, but not the ones from back in the day. Is it too late for CBS to complain? I would.

More disappointment in one hour on WFNX Athol!

Thanks for info! The streaming on WWBZ site isn't working yet. As has been said by some others on dis. groups, etc., maybe WBZ wouldn't bother complaining about a station more than a few miles away from them--maybe they could complain about the call letter thing to FCC but not sure if they'd be forced to change. Maybe. As for WFNX, maybe it could be more of the variety hits type deal or AC etc. but I don't think they'd be reviving the old 101.7 type format.
You never know, though...

WWBZ site now has song listing. 8 am hr. Bobby Darin, Don Gibson, Patsy Cline, Four Tops, Dion, Everly Bros., Crystals, Smokey Robinson, Merle Haggard

The All New 99.9 FM

We Play a Little Bit of Everything!

Unfortunately we don't quite know what to call it.
(Tears for Fears Break it Down Again first song? Couldn't get aircheck, it kept dropping every few seconds)

WFNX, now asking its listener for a new name, is playing a variety hits format, sort of. Sounds like the AM only decades newer, and includes country cuts, classic hits and pop chart hits of recent decades. I guess.

Well that is probably why the new webpage, and the old ❝vote the format❞ page kept crashing FireFox (Linux Mint version).

The site 700wbz.com tonight has no DNS entry or IP address and is completely MIA. Possibly they are moving the site to something other than the server hosting adventurebighorns.com

Looks like perhaps the CBS lawyers went after them. The new website is: http://www.legends700.com/ and now the logo says Legends 700 WWBZ.

Now some are wondering if Carl Strube etc at WNBP Newburyport will go after them for the "Legends" service mark. I was on I-93 in Andover yesterday and could pick up WWBZ...

Correction: you're wondering that, nobody else is. "Legends WWBP" was a registered service mark in MA, but expired in 2009 and was not renewed. There's no other radio station that has "legends" or anything like it registered in MA.

Ah, I had not seen Bob's comment over there.

I'm not sure how much weight an expired service mark would carry, but I would assume "none."

Meanwhile, on WBZ-FM -- er, WFNX, they're asking the listeners to come up with a Legendary nickname. AFAIK, there's no prize involved. But if you want to be the winner, just look around at other stations in the region and swipe their handle.

You'd think by now the grand poobah of this radio empire would realize that it's not the name or the calls, it's the content and the frequency that matter more. "Legends" and "WBZ" aside, 700 has had more cutesy call letters over the years than Carter has pills. In another era under a different owner, CAT did okay for a daytimer in West Mugwump. It's also been TUB and JOE under the present ownership, to no avail. "Happiness is a thing called JOE" isn't a bad slogan, but they never used that or any other positioner, unless you count ESPN700.

What's more, it doesn't matter whether any listeners like these "two new, perfect radio stations." There are plenty of choices from Noho and Greenfield, Keene, Worcester and even Springfield and Brattleboro, and I'll take one or two of those, thanks, but it doesn't matter. The only relevant consideration here is whether local business owners personally like most of the music they hear on one or both of these local stations because ratings aren't taken anywhere NEAR here! So where are their salespeople? And WHO are they? Everyone knows the Deane Brothers from WJDF, the local FM competition, and their four member sale force.

One side note, 97.3 WJDF Orange has yet to hear complaints from 97.3 WJFD New Bedford. Maybe it's because the Orange station isn't calling itself El Globo.

OK, I'm done. Let's all go back to obsessing over WUFC.

I guess they have given up on the whole WWBZ Imaging theme. They are going withe "AM 700" With only the station ID at the top of the hour. Shame. I kinda liked the Old `BZ jingles and the "Happiness Is" spots. Hoped they were not pushed into Changing.

You Might Be Wondering...
June 19, 2014 / AM 700

Just what is it that we're doing with AM 700? Well, despite some popular beliefs, we're not actually out to compromise or infringe on the success of a long time Boston area radio station. Quite the opposite, our original intention was to pay a sort of tribute to what that station was in the 50's and 60's. Being a very small AM daytime only radio station in Orange, MA, we never would have imagined that our station launch would garner so much attention! But it did, and listeners were very quick to tell us what a huge mistake we were making, some with very eloquent wording, such as calling us "INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH STUPID." To be fair and honest, that listener was a bit accurate...and after some research on trademark law, we realized that we had crossed the line. We worked diligently to change all of the station produced pieces to reflect our full call letters and slogan, hoping to quickly correct our mistake. By that night, everything was changed.

However, all of that wasn't good enough for a Certain Broadcasting Station, who claims that even using our full call letters (which the FCC granted to us and that we are legally required to announce at the top of every hour) is an infringement of a trademark and an attempt to benefit from the success of their heritage AM station. We tend to disagree, however we don't have the financial backing to take on a legal battle with a major business enterprise over a small station with only limited financial opportunities. Furthermore, yet another broadcaster out there claims that our use of a certain word to describe icons of the 50s and 60s is infringing on a trademark. Hard to believe a small AM daytime radio station could make so many people upset.

At the end of the day, our purpose is simple...to play great music that we feel is absent from the current radio dial. We've been critiqued as playing the 'wrong' oldies, or that our music is 'too old', or that our songs aren't 'sophisticated enough'...look guys, we're not trying to take over the world, we're just trying to have fun, play great songs, and bring some life back into an AM station that has basically been sitting doing nothing for the past several years. Is that so wrong?

For all the listeners out there who have written in with kind words, we thank you. And we know that right now, our station's production values are a little boring...but we're actively searching for a station name that is not 'owned' by somebody else and call letters that won't make anybody angry. We're going to continue playing the greatest music ever made (in our opinion)...and will be adding a lot more songs from the era.

Now let's stop being so serious and do the Twist!
