WBZ TV rebranding begins with Super Bowl

Re: CBS 4, not WBZ

Yes, strangely no "4"--I must have added it in by mistake. A look at the WBZ webpage shows there is
indeed no 4 (yet)

It certainly is WBZ

A dignified look for a pioneer New England broadcaster. NERW gives props to the new logo today -- after all Scott Fybush once worked for WBZ.

As for the station's new URL? CBS did its homework and most likely found that people refer to the station as WBZ-TV. [The same thing is true in New York for WCBS-TV.]

i wouldn't call it 'dignified'. the new color themes are very pale and blah. and the new mic cubes look clunky and give out so much glare you can't even see any call letters or logos when the sun hits them. until they solve their anchor team problems no call letter or set makeover will boost their numbers. plus with very likeable ed harding now taking over co-anchor role on 5,5:30,6 and 11 at ch.5, there'll be more problems for 4.

Well, I think the call letters are a good start, and they just going to Pre-Group W, so still good (except for no 4, imo). But the news is certainly another matter, and they will need to come up with something more reminiscent of Eyewitness News (or some other Action Newscast) if they want to win back an audience.

By the way, I just came back from San Antonio, and you should see how Clear-channel's WOAI TV looks - WBZ should look at them!

Just saw the new "old" look in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjM0prtcDkc

My thoughts?
The colors bring back what was used just before the station dropped the original Group W font. But other than that, (and I hate to say this), the look and music are uninspiring. It looks more like something you would expect to see in a resort town like San Diego, or maybe in Florida, not a big city like Boston or New York City. It does not inspire the hard edge Action News look that WBZ had with Eyewitness News in the 70s and 80s. Finally, (and I don't know if this is temporary or not), but they still have previous 4 flashing at the begining.

So I guess what I am thinking, is that they need to go back to the drawing board on this, I don't see this cutting into Newscenter 5, and certainly not 7News.

Agreed (or the red one they used for years before that!)

You know, we need to start a campaign.... BRING BACK THE Group W 4 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, man!

I remember back in the 50's, 60's and 70's channel 4 was THE news station in Boston TV. It was the only newscast anyone I knew of ever watched. The other stations might as well have not been carrying news at all. But when the "new" channel 5 came on in 1972 channel 4 finally had some credible competition. Over the next two or three decades that competition got a lot fiercer with practically every station in town taking a slice of the pie. Channel 56 debuted a 10 o'clock report and Fox 25 followed suit. Eventually we got NECN that was on 24/7. Why even channel 2 had news for awhile! Throughout all this channel 4 lost its identity and with it any notion that WBZ TV ever was the news leader. Sad fate for such a giant to suffer. Bringing back an old logo may or may not bring back the ratings, but it would certainly be a step in the right direction.

They need to bring more than that. WBZ news was dead last in Feb sweeps.
They actually lost viewers from a year ago. Time for a shakeup. A big one.
Hopefully, Lobel is set loose soon. He's absolutely unwatchable.
