WCLS-FM--Classic Hits--Spencer, Ellettsville, Bloomington & News Service

Since the Spencer frequency switched with the Brazil frequency (92.7 & 97.7, respectively), things appear to be good for the Spencer radio station, now, Classic Hits, 97.7, WCLS-FM. The station has more professional sounding production elements than it ever has and the music is a major, major improvement over the old, stale country formats it has carried in the past. I have even heard this station in Bloomington businesses, a triump for the folks in Spencer (Programming staff) & Bloomington (Sales staff)!!! I want to commend the people at WCLS for doing some good things with the new frequency and the larger signal.

Recently, I had started to hear FOX News as WCLS's news service, a change from their previous service, which was from CNN and ABC, I believe. My personal opinion was that this was a bad move on the station's part and could, potentially, be a negative move for the station. I would think that some of the listeners in the rural counties might not mind so much; however, those growing listeners in Monroe County, specifically, inside Bloomington, may not care to hear the "reports" of FOX News. I would definitely count myself as one of those listeners. I felt this was a major step backwards and a blunder on the part of management. But, while sampling the station, again, this weekend, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that ABC News was back as WCLS's news service. I'm not sure what happened behind the scenes; but, I want to offer my sincerest appreciation to management and to all who were involved in this, I feel, smart move. Thank you, WCLS and keep up the great work; you are deserving that nice, new, and larger frequency!

I would be happy to hear others' thoughts. Thanks!

Well, as someone with no know-how, I will give my opinion, I use the Croc as an example:

First, will people turn off a station for either a 2 or 5 minute news blurb when the other 55 minutes is what they want to hear?? NO!! They will either mentally tune-out, or do other things. The Croc, while differently refreshing, is exactly what alot of people want to hear. The Pilot truck stop in Brazil has them on the PA 24/7. The station does the mix of country and rock very well.

As far as Fox over CNN or ABC?..the people will consider it a country song when they like rock or vice-versa. Just a minor blip. Not a deal breaker.

Last time I checked (some months ago), WCLS was using the (very dry) AP Radio News. Fox News would be a huge step up from that.

Has the spot load increased? Last time I listened for any considerable time, they were running a commercial free weekend.

I actually received proof of this, Thursday. A friend of mine indicated that he loved listening to WCLS, until he heard them using FOX News. That same day, he turned them off and purchased a Sirius satellite radio. He hasn't "tuned back" to them since. As I had not initiated this conversation, I was a little surprised to be having the conversation, so quickly after making this specific post.

I would agree that this may not be a typical listener response, whatever that may be; however, I am glad to hear that WCLS is no longer taking that chance and has stopped using FOX News.

I can't understand why someone would jump to Sirius just because of using Fox news? After all it's only 3-5 mins. of 1 hour. I've listened to WCLS and like the selection of music they play plus they sound good. Yea I listen to the news but I wouldn't go satellite unless National news is all I wanted to hear on my radio. WCLS keep up the good work and Tony you do a terrific job with sports.

If I could suggest one thing for WCLS, when Dick Bartley is on Saturday Nights, he plays some real gems in the un-sold spot breaks. I would greatly prefer that they drop the sports update & let Bartley have that few minutes for 1 more song. 104.9/Columbus did a better job with Bartley when they carried him. Aside from that, WCLS is a good addition to the Bloomington area radio dial. Personally, I like Fox News, but I'm not a typical Bloomingtonian...
