WDEL had live/local coverage of Obama/ Biden event, WILM didn't

With Allan Loudell at WDEL, it isn't surprising, but is good to hear his usual coverage during elections as today with the Obama/Biden event in Springfield Ill today. About an hour before the event took place, WDEL did an election special with Allan and his interviews with CBS radio reporters, political analyists, etc. This was the sort of thing that you used to be able to expect from WILM. WILM had reruns of Rush on instead. I didn't tune back to WILM at 3pm to hear whether or not they pre-empted Rush to carry the actual event or if they just stayed on the bird in auto pilot.

In some ways, it does make sense that WILM didn't broadcast the Obama/Biden event as most of Rush's listeners would have tuned out rather than hear Obama or Biden speak. Rush's listeners seem to only be interested in hearing a Democrat speak if Rush is there to interpret the speeches for them as he bashes what they would be saying or mocking them in some way. So, from a business point of view, rather than a public service point of view, WILM probably did the correct business thing in not pre-empting Rush.

With Allan at WDEL, I expect to hear McCain's pick for VP on 1150 via CBS radio, as well as the extra coverage that Loudell is known for in Delaware. One station says to-ma-to and the other says tom-at-o. However, I think its fair to say that WDEL is becoming the News/Talk station where as WILM has become basically a Talk station with some local news. There's nothing wrong with that, but when there's breaking news national or local a part time news team won't offer the coverage needed as the station is in auto pilot with no one there to cover the story. WDEL apparently has decided to fill that vacuum left when WILM stopped being the Wilmington news authority to become the satellite talker for Wilmington. I'm glad WDEL is picking up the slack.
