Weather Channel To Air Movies For First Time

The first movies will be "GONE WITH THE WIND" followed by "RAIN MAN"

Bad idea to air movies on TWC, however your post gave me a great idea. When they do weather on the 8's they should start playing all music that has a weather related theme. The Association "Everybody knows it's Windy." How about Milli Vanilli "Blame it on The Rain". There must be plenty of Weather songs. Beatles "Good Day Sunshine" , "Fire and Rain" James Taylor, "Raindrops keep falling On My Head" BJ Thomas.

I could go on and on. But I won't. lol

If the Weather Channel's press release is any indication, they are planning to air "The Wizard Of Oz," too!

“From the Nor’easter in The Perfect Storm to the tornado that takes Dorothy to Oz, weather has a long history as a film star,” said Geoffrey Darby, executive vice president of programming for The Weather Channel...

I don't think we're in TV Land anymore.

I don't think we're in TV Land anymore.

Didn't Darby used to be executive producer for many Nickelodeon programs in the 1980s and early 1990s? I've seen his name in the end credits for many of Nick's shows such as "Double Dare".

If so, maybe it seems that The Weather Channel wants to be more like Nick or TV Land.

I remember when they first came on in 1981. This channel was top notch for the latest and current weather reports. So sad to see a once great channel go to this.

They had some great talent to announce for them in their early days. Dennis Smith, the late Dr. John Hope and Jenneta Jones are some of those people I'm thinking of.

I liked the way they used terms such as: Ground Clutter and Green Blobs. That was simply amazing to me.

It was from this channel that I learned so much about the term weather and all the words that surround it.

I still watch The Weather Channel but find myself not too impressed with their current presentation.

Wish they would take it back to the old school and bring back some of their past announcers. (Those that are still living.)

Oh well! I can't have everything I want.

Did any of you guys notice that The Perfect Storm was on two channels this week (AMC and Bravo)? So, not only does NBC Universal plan to bastardize the format of TWC, but they're doing it with movies that are frequently shown all over the cable lineup! Brilliant. And these guys receive 6 figure salaries to make decisions like this. Just goes to show that it's not WHAT you know, it's WHO you know....

Knowing the wisdom of programming strategy, not just in the NBC family, but some other groups (especially Viacom), I think that "It's not WHAT you know, it's WHAT YOU THINK you know". It's the main reason television has generally been going down the clunker.

Frankly, I don't mind movies on The Weather Channel.

The Perfect Storm, Twister (with Helen Hunt), The Day After Tomorrow...if it's weather related, you know TWC will have 'em. Besides, 24 hours of nothing but forecasts around the clock have long been passe!

Yup. There's weather.com for those.

In fact, I'd say weather.com is more important than the cable channel that happens to be called "The Weather Channel".

This is an example of a media outlet becomes totally irrelevant, just like here in San Diego we have what was our powerhouse news and information stations which have been purveyors of right wing talk shows, commercials, and hours upon hours upon hours of informercials for colon blow, herbal erectile dysfunction "cures," and "buy gold now before it is too late" brokered hours. Broadcasters out for a quick and cheap way to fill hours of programming are driving their audiences to the Internet for the information they want, when they need it.

You mean things that have happened in the past generation, like widespead adoption of that high-falootin' broadband (back in MY day, we had narrowband and we LIKED it, you spoiled kids!) and one-touch weather access on mobile phones (APPS? My old rotary phone as all the apps I need!)?

Never mind the gang from the Majestic Oaks Rest Home. Looks like the chefs forgot to put enough fiber in the muffins again and got them all riled up.

Here's a uteful idea that should then appeal to those too young to eat bran muffins: let's just remove all the names from all of the cable channels, take away their identities and show the same dozen movies of the month and cheap, crappy reality shows on all of them. Yeah, that's what we do in the "modern" era. So, instead of having lots of choices as grandma and grandpa intended; we can have few choices except for what time of day to view Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

Also weatherbug.com .

Im surprised no one else wants to start up a Weather Network to compete with The Weather Channel. We can have 3 cable news networks so why not have another weather network. Im sure CBS or ABC could do it and show weather all the time. Not sure what a good name would be tho.

Honestly, I think it would be a better channel if a smaller entity did it. Prior to buying TWC, NBC had a weather channel and it wasn't all that good. Just seems like when the big corporations get their hands on these things, they don't give it the same level of effort as a smaller (more dedicated) group would.

Mr. Murdoch ought to give it a try. "FOX WEATHER: Our forecasts don't have a liberal bias! Our Fair & Balanced Radar shows an F5 that's barreling down on a small town in Vermont ... WOO HOO!!!" ;-)
