Well, I guess I need to find that film and view it. I'm in the demo, but never saw it. (Side benefit of reading the posts, I guess!)
It depends on the show. You need to have a "feel" for who your audience is. Dumbing it down means it's probably not a show worth listening to anyway...As this thread meanders, a very radio relevant point is brought to light. How often do radio folks take for granted that "everybody knows" what even the best air talent and talk shows are talking about? Even though the origin and significance of "Leave the gun, take the cannoli..." is mandatory in Buffalo, some folks (gasp) are unaware. Oh, and the egg scene in Cool Hand Luke? Grossly amusing, but instructive. It reveals the character and underlying theme of the story/movie. BTW, written report/review not required David, but... we'll give you a few weeks.
The greatest issue I have with 60’s and 70’s films is the prevalence of t hat era’s sort of jazzy, percussive soundtracks. Earlier films are quite acceptable but many in these decades are, to me at least, very annoying for that reason. That was an era of GREAT films. Strother Martin was an iconic character actor. "We are going to help that boy get his mind right". Buddy must not be a film buff if the "Failure to Communicate" quote went over his head...
David, how did you escape seeing it all these years? I saw it and "Citizen Kane" as part of a class in High School.Well, I guess I need to find that film and view it. I'm in the demo, but never saw it.
