Hey good for Carter Alan! That's an awesome honor for a hard working jock. I'm proud to see New England performing well. That was a nice nod for 'PRO down the road as well.

WEEI-FM is legendary.

The softrock plays on.

The Eagles without the turkeys ... Linda Ronstadt without wondering what just Blue Bayou ...

And... "Joni without the baloney." Those billboard were quite memorable. Who was the programmer who created these slogans?

Not sure if he created the slogans but I believe Clark Smidt was the program director. My favorite all time station to this day. And I was able to hear one of my all time favorite songs "The Wind" by Circus Maximus in regular rotation. :)

Spent summer 1976 working at the snack bar at Aetna on State Street and the radio was always tuned to either that station or WCOZ. It would have been WCOZ all the time but I was working with an older woman who, although hard of hearing, still preferred gentler background music. EEI-FM played a lot of album tracks as well as soft AC hits of the day. I still remember Billy Joel's "James" as being in heavy rotation that summer.

Name sounds familiar; I do know that effort (CBS stations, right?) pops up in Harry Chapin's
W.O.L.D: "Drinkin' the beer at my last big gig, it made my voice go low/ They said that they
liked The Young Sound (back singers: sound, sound)/ When they let me go."

music for young sound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVcicZ1_DYY
Music begins about 20 sec in

Wikipedia entry for WODS:
" It ran CBS's "The Young Sound" format beginning in 1965 after Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations forced it to cease to be a 24-hour relay of the AM side (WEEI 590). "The Young Sound" was an easy listening format focusing on instrumental versions of recent pop tunes. By 1969, "The Young Sound" had evolved to a Top 40/AOR hybrid format, voice tracked on WEEI-FM by Dick Provost"

Singing "Live and let die" the other day. An all-time fav. Wings was pretty good.

Junior's Farm is an underrated Wings track

"Jet" and "Helen Wheels," too. "Junior's Farm's" B-side was a country-flavored number called "Sally G," that I remember getting some play in Boston as well as the A-side. The flip of "Helen Wheels" also had a country sound to it: "Country Dreamer." I remember hearing it on EEI-FM and Robin Young's overnight weekend show on WBZ.

I think it was Dick Guntin not Provost - He was the image of that station for 15 years.

In the 70's you would see many WEEI-FM decals ( with a rainbow ) on many cars.

You got to wonder what would have happened if ownership limits had been relaxed earlier allowing CBS to keep WEEI-AM ( they had to sell when they bought KRLD Dallas ) and 590 was sold to Papa Gino's. That sale started the chain of events that would not only make 590 irrelevant on the AM band but also would cause WHDH to vanish.

2 different guys. Provost was the voice of WEEI-FM in the late 60s/early 70s when they did the automated Top 40/lite AOR format. Guntin (I always thought it was Dunton) was around in the late 70s/early 80s soft rock format. I believe he hung in for a while when they switched to CHR in '82.
