Over the air radio returns from high on the side of Cleopatra Hill. Gulch Radio has hit the FM airwaves, after 12 years as an internet and Part15 AM - KCRJ - morphing into FM100.5 KZRJ-LP in full stereo, rockin' and soulin' the Verde Valley, with listener reports from all over the valley and driver reports from as far as Flagstaff to the Cherry Road turn off on I-17 - that's a lot of territory from a 100 watt mini-flamethrower. More than we had ever dreamed. The late Lou Burke (FM95.9 - 1983 - KCRJ) and pioneer broadcaster Charles A Robinson (AM1340 -1926 KCRJ) were right when they picked the edge of the same cliff, within just a few feet of today's tower site to build their stations upon. It is surely a spot made for radio.
We're in program test mode, our license to cover has been filed, the studio to transmitter microwave dishes work, the Barix setups have been mastered. Lot's of friends have been made, thanks for the backhoe to bury the electrical supply lines and thanks for the boom truck to set up the 40 foot Rohn and Shively up top - thanks for the labor to finish out the 17,000 lbs of concrete it took for the mast foundation - thanks for all the technical help needed to get the microwave system working and the Barix boxes too - not to forget the dandy Dasdec II that completed it's first weekly test - that thing is a challenge for first time guys.
A soft and gentle good bye to AM1670, the mighty Hamilton that served our little town for so many years, and all the challenges it took to make it sound is good as it could and as strong as it could be. No matter what, AM radio is still magic, with a unique quality and charm all it's own. Some stuff can sound just great on AM and some not so much ... but hey ... it was there everyday 24/7/365 doing it's thing and against all odds people listened and loved it.
Need to mention that a few folks got their noses bent a bit out shape in the process. We're sorry about that - let's all chill out and enjoy.
So 13 years in the making - we made it. The little town is making music for all the folks to share.
God - this thing sounds good.
