WEMP's Sister Chicago Station Moving Towards Straight News

To move beyond the nitpicking...
I think WEMP is starting to show some promise, now that it is more similar to WINS. The ten minute "nonstop" news blocks seem to be a worthwhile feature. These do provide a decent quick summary of the news, with an emphasis on local happenings. Sports and financial headlines have been added, and the traffic reports are much more brisk.
There is still some celebrity gossip and other fluff, but only during certain parts of the hour. It is no longer mixed in together with the serious news. Overall, the presentation seems to move at a quicker pace, much like WINS.
As WINS has an inconsistent signal outside of New York City, WEMP can be a more pleasant listen while driving around, in terms of steady reception, and the clear FM sound.
Perhaps the stereo signal should have been retained, as there are many clips from songs, and sound beds.
While much of the criticism of the station was deserved, its improvements should also be noted.

With 101.9's stereo and HD turned off, maybe WINS will now start marketing themselves as "New York's Only All-New Station In HD"! ::)

Note that although the stereo pilot may be turned off on WEMP, the HD-1 broadcast continues in mono along with the WEMP-HD2 Smooth Jazz/AC format in stereo (when it's not turned off for maintenance, malfunction, etc.).

Plus just for clarification, in addition to WINS being available in HD on its own 1010 AM frequency, it's also available on 102.7 WWFS-HD3.

I'm sure the reference to "92.3 WINS lol" ;D ;) meant *if* WINS would either simulcast or move to that frequency in the future.

There are many fine female sports reporters... but the two on the midday do not fall into that category. You can tell they haven't half a clue of what they're reading and don't give a rat's ass about it either.

Memo to WEMP: Get a sports reporter. If you want to keep the female lean, get a woman. But at least get someone who knows/cares about it. The equivalent would be Wayne Cabot doing short reports about what dresses are in and which sunglasses look best on him.

Second memo to WEMP: Please fix your processing. Now it's all compression and nothing else. I am a contract engineer and would be happy to come in and fix it for you for a small fee. Right now, it's about 4dB lower than everyone else and sounds like a smashed DBX compressor with all highs and lows.

I just tuned in 101.9 and the processing is really bad. The modulation is low and it sounds tinny and squashed, almost like they're trying to use an AM processor on an FM signal.

So now that they've made the audio on FM sound as bad as WINS on AM, what's next? A rip-off of the teletype sound effect?

Also there stream sounds like shit. http://204.209.255.119/WEMPFMAAC Overmodulating etc, etc. The current stream on there website sound like it's feeded directly off air. The overmodulating stream is from there new streaming host, liquidcompass. FM News 101.1 Chicago is already using it but WEMP are still struggling with it. ???

B.t.w. they using a new voice-over guy.
And in my 15-20 minute listening sample this afternoon, I noticed far more "hard news" and far less "fluff", although they still have "entertainment news" segments often enough. But the audio processing is terrible! The compressor's release time is set way too fast, causing the announcers to sound like they're gasping for air!
