Westwood One adds new 24/7 Good Time Oldies format to replace Scott Shannon's TOC

Is there any cheaper shot on an internet discussion forum than accusing someone you disagree with of being a "troll"? Perhaps there's one, but since so many people are aware of "Godwin's Law", the previous cheapest shot has fallen into disuse.

Indeed! The format this board is devoted to is the music that the format is made from. To not discuss the music in a board about a music format on the radio would be like not being allowed to mention bricks on the "brick houses" board on ArchitectureDiscussions.com.

Nice Analogy.

"We'll return to more of the greatest lost hits on earth.....right after this".......

Avid - did I call anyone a troll on here? Don't recall that I did. Never really considered using such a term. Generally speakin.

No, I did.

And I did it with considerable security and confidence.

Anyone who calls "racist" a statement that Hawai'i has three languages or variants is trolling, looking for harm when none is there..

Anyone who thinks Puerto Ricans were "slaves"...

Anyone who thinks Puerto Ricans are not "real" citizens...

And, of course, anyone who thinks that diversity is destroying the country...

I could go on.

"Rah rah rah! Go David! Go David" I previously said that you are nothing more than a cheerleader for David, and damn if you didn't just go ahead and prove it again right here. Your next original thought will be your first.

Hey! I'm the cheerleader here...or a former one, at least...and I'm not sharing my pom poms with anyone, btw.

Get ready for something to really cheer about...WW1 Good Time Oldies launches in 12 days. Jim Zippo (my hubby), John Summers and Kevan Browning have all been working over at the Cumulus studios on Montford..... (the old SMN/ABC/Citadel/Cumulus building) to ready the new GTO 24/7 studios. A homecoming of sorts for Jim who broadcast from those same studios for over a decade!

And you come off like a cheerleader for David. How about some original thought? Oh, yeah, you aren't capable of that. You can't even copy THEIR stats correctly.

How is this for an original thought - somebody with decades of experience in all facets of radio is going to have far more knowledge of any of this than any listener - period. I don't know what you do for a living, but I sure as hell wouldn't be trying to tell you how to run your business - you know more than me on that subject. So don't come on here and act like you have some knowledge or idea that hasn't been tried a thousand times - probably even by one of us on this board. Cheerleader? No, not quite. Realist who understands the business from the inside - yes.

That may be your interpretation, but on a Radio Discussions board, the conversation should be about the FORMAT that uses the music, and how it's used, not the other way around. It's useless to spend time talking about The Critters or Crispian St. Peter when they don't get played in the format.

"Pied Piper" is just as classic as "Hey Jude", both were (and still are) hits. And yes, they still get played in the format, just not in your town.

So, how many LOST "Good Time Oldies" would any of you play in that format?

47. But, they'd be spread out over time, with no more than two different ones at most per day. And, they'd be "lost" oldies that got good responses at live concerts, and that had a good "classic" oldies sound that had the same audio feel as the hits that were played.

If a station's appeal is so tenuous that one "lost" oldie every 12 hours would ruin its ratings, it's too far gone to even attempt saving.

Heck, I'd go as far as playing them once or twice every hour and the rest of the songs each hour would be the more positive ones. We're not asking for much here. But don't announce them all as "lost 45's", just mix them in.

There are so many great oldies that didn't quite make super-hit status. It would be refreshing to hear them again rather than the same old 'hits' from the 60's/70's/80's, etc.
Mix them into the playlist without apologies.

That's why God invented the iPod. Download them and make the artists some money. A lot of them could really use it.

Ok, that's your funniest post yet, Big A. Then again, what humor do I know, according to post 107-T.

So, let me get this right. This entire post about unknown songs has been based upon a hypothetical radio station playing 47 unknown songs? So, the rest of the titles of this format are all tried and true songs that have mass appeal? Avid, were these songs part of the list you originally posted on one of these threads? If not, what songs are you thinking of playing? You don't have to list them all, etc. Maybe just a handful - 40 or 41. This is interesting to me. Thank you.

It has always been my experience that when two people agree on absolutely everything, that one of them is irrelevant. So who is irrelevant here, you or David? He can actually argue his points. You can't even copy and paste correctly, as we found out last month. If your stations are anything like your debating "skills" (term used loosely here) then your stations change formats every month.

I meant to mention earlier in this thread that we had a station here in Nashville that played obscure stuff 24/7. Its call letters were WRVU. I am sure that Tibbs is/was familiar with it. Its listeners were those who were "too cool for the room." I seriously doubt that any of us would have been among that number.

I have previously mentioned Hippie Radio. But we also have WVCP over on the other side of town. I can only pick them up when I am over on that side of town. But I have gotten used to having to listen to "rimshot" signals over the past decade or so.
