WFAN Hinting At Getting Yankees In 2013 With 25th Anniversary Promo?

WFAN has been playing a promo for their "25th Anniversary Greatest Sports Moments" contest, and samples three "great sports moments" that were carried on their air, such as... the winning call of the Yankees winning the 1996 World Series... what? The Yankees were on WABC that year! I know because I and many other New Yorkers were listening on 77 WABC that Saturday night! The Yankees weren't even on WCBS-AM in the mid-'90's, so it's not like they can claim it was on a sister station and get away with it...

WFAN using the Yankees in their own "great sports moments of the last 25 years" promo can only mean one thing: They're going after the Yankees radio contract when it expires after this year.

Also, WFAN uses a clip of the Devils winning the Stanley Cup over the Ducks in 2003. Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the Devils on WABC back in 2003, as well?

Were they the local announcers, D? I imagine they would have been -- Sterling and Kay.

Years ago, of course, as spice, WFAN used to play clips of fantastic New York moments in sports, few of which were broadcast on WFAN, WNBC. or even WRCA. It was like hearing an Oldie on a Top 40 station. Good stuff.

I gather that certain exclusives in the 'package' of Yankees-Sterling-Waldman-Kay must now belong to CBS. Some sort of domain waiver, maybe. Like the way the Russ Hodges 1951 Giants call is heard in unlikely places. And heck, WABC certainly isn't going to play any of them.

Maybe those clips and rights were part of the Imus trade. Imus and 1001 hamburgers to be named later, and the deal went through.

I've long wondered why the Yankees weren't moved to the Fan years ago and the city's minor league team..the Mets placed on 1130. NY is a Yankees town and always will be and the premiere franchise should be on the premiere sports station.

The point is, the clips are being presented under the guise that they were "great sports moments" that took place on their air over the last 25 years. (By the way, after the Yankees and Devils calls was the call of the Giants winning the previous Super Bowl.)

Also, consider they didn't use audio of the Rangers winning the Stanley Cup in 1994 - I could be wrong, but weren't they on WFAN that year? I know they used to be on the old WNBC, along with the Knicks.

I had to look it up, D to The J, even though my visiting Dad and I actually were listening to that final game over here in NE PA. Even my Mom was listening. Dad had been a Ranger fan forever, from back when the NHL had like four teams.

Wikipedia says that, indeed, on WFAN, Marv Albert, Howie Rose and Sal Messina called the game.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees moved to WFAN in 2013. The Yankees will bring greater advertising revenue than the Mets. The Mets have been part of WFAN since the station's inception as a sports station but times have changed. As a Mets' fan, I'd hate to see the team lose their long time 50 kW blaster flagship but given the state of the ballclub, it's inevitable.

Didn't the Yanks sign a 5 year deal just this past fall to stay on WCBS?

Although the Fan makes perfect sense for them, if the Yanks are tied up on 880 and the Mets are contractually bound to 660, all this speculation is a non-issue.

Incidentally, one year is all that remains on WFAN's current contract with the Mets... coincidence?

Makes me wonder if the Mets actually won the World Series during the last 25 years, if they'd opt to use that clip over any of the Yankees' recent championship calls... WHN had flipped to WFAN the year after their last pennant. Even more interesting is the fact that WFAN didn't work in a clip of the Rangers' championship since that indeed was on their own air (thanks, Steve).

Marv Albert's call of the Rangers winning the 1994 Stanley Cup HAS played on some of the 25th Anniversary promos.

WFAN started using WABC's Yankee highlight clips in September 1995 as the Yanks made their run to the wild card playoff spot (their 1st postseason appearance since 1981). I can't remember if WABC allowed the FAN to continue using the highlight clips right through to the end of WABC's Yankee contract at the end of the 2001 World Series (Yankees-Diamondbacks).

Basing an opinion about whether the Yankees or Mets will be on one or the other (or neither) of the CBS Radio New York 50 kw blowtorches by what plays on a WFAN promo is likely not the best barometer.

WFAN has stuck with the Mets through other recent dark periods in franchise history (mid-1991 to 1996, for example). The decision to keep or release broadcast rights will be made upon how much advertising can be sold for each team's broadcasts and if it's financially feasible for CBS Radio to continue the current arrangement. Also, they're waiting to see if there will be other players in the market that may drive up the rights fees or have other payment/advertising schemes.

I'm sure that there is already some strategy already in place due to previous negotiations that have resulted in the Mets + Yanks contracts running out at the same time (as mentioned earlier).

Can someone clarify *which* call from 1996 WFAN is using? There was a local broadcast, but also the CBS national feed, which WFAN may well have carried.

The title of this post is so misleading. There is no point in creating speculation from a single on-air promotion where there is none in reality. It's the very same thing Bob Raissman does in the Daily News. It's just plain pointless and irresponsible.

This post comes of like a 12 yr old in a school yard. The Yankees have not always owned NY and didn't when WFAN was started. Perhaps the Mets fans have a better spending ratio for advertisers than Yankees fans. That's what drives radio,. Not wins and loses or even ratings. it's sales.

It's the local John Sterling call from WABC New York of the final out of the clinching Game 6 of the 1996 World Series on Sat. October 26, 1996 - Yankees 3, Braves 2. (Foul pop-out to Yanks 3rd baseman Charlie Hayes.)

And if WFAN was running the national CBS Radio feed, it certainly raises the question of why they'd air a call that aired on a competing station in the first place.

I appreciate all of the feedback.

Just stating an obvious fact. Yes..the Mets had their moment in the sun in 1986. But since the 90s, the Yankees have ruled NY Baseball. I can't imagine one can make more money from running the Mets vs the Yankees.

Even though the Mets have not been as competitive as the Yankees in recent years decades, the bottom line is, it's still a major league baseball team in the number one market. There will always be your boilerplate beer and car sponsors no matter how bad your baseball team may be performing.
