WFAN on out-of-town HD's - they can't be serious

Hello....

I am home sick from work here in Florida, and I decided to listen to the Cards/Mets game on WFAN via WEAT West Palm Beach's HD3. Imagine when I tune in, and only sports talk! Sounds as if it was delayed from this afternoon.

What's the big idea?? Is WFAN "blacking out" Mets games on outta-market HD? I mean, really.

If this is correct, it's certainly not a promo for iBiquity.....

cd

It's not iBiquity's fault here, it's MLB. Yep, it's blacked out on the out of market signals because they want you to subscribe to MLB online to hear the game.

Well that's true....but I didn't know that MLB knew HD existed! ;)

No matter...I caught KMOX tonight, so there, MLB!

cd

We reduce clutter by blocking out all of these channels from our rotation ;D

That was a sick 9th inning, but unfortunately the wrong team won :-/

Too bad the MLB can't block skywave.

And if you were to tune into the Mets/Cardinals game on Thursday at its regular time, you would have heard sports talk - live sports talk (game delayed by rain). ::)

The WFAN you're hearing on HD radio out of market is probably the same one that goes out on their webstream. They usually use canned talk or FOX/ESPN feeds in place of games. Streams usually block out professional sports such as MLB or NFL, due to league restrictions, so you can only hear those over the air from the given market. The only option otherwise is to DX or road trip. :)

^ Yah I figured that out. When I turn on a radio, I expect to hear a *radio station*, not a webstream :)

Really though, it was commercial after commercial after commercial, with a rare sports update from 4 hours ago....

Oh well. As to yesterday, LaRussa's got a lotta splainin' to do! :) I am not a Cards fan, but I like to follow the playoff races. That blow-up could well go down in history.

cd

Last time I checked my local HD2 during NFL season, I was almost sure I heard either the Jets or Giants (whoever WFAN is the flagship of)---I plan to check this out this weekend & get back on this. Of course I am sure that MLB & NFL have different MO's.

We believe all the games are available on SiriusXM in real time.
We know this is true for NHL and assume it is true as well for the other sports.

IIRC, Kennesaw Molehill Selig tried to do (or at least encourage) just that a few years ago. He wanted the teams to take their games off the 50 kW blowtorches and move them to FM or lower-powered AMs like the Cardinals did for a few years (notice they went back to KMOX this season). Why? To force everybody to buy the audio package. Didn't work, although for $15, Gameday Audio is still a heck of a deal. And, unlike MLB.TV/Extra Innings, there are no blackouts.

The market will make the decision for him over the next few years (some teams have already moved their flagships to FM), but at least for the time being, the Cubs, White Sox, Yankees, Mets, Giants, Cardinals, etc. aren't leaving the blowtorches even if they eventually simulcast on FM.

And, the NBA and NHL allow their games to be streamed or you can go to their websites (still free). So do some colleges.

How many NFL teams are still on AM? Not many. They've also been encouraged to go to FM, not so much to force fans to buy the online audio but to get the games on the band that the demo the advertisers care about is listening to.

Yes, you're quite correct. The NFL has had an FM presence for close to 20 years, but there are still some teams that are on the big AMs (Both New Jersey NYC teams, plus the Bears & Packers, come to mind immediately).

You'll see more MLB teams move to FM in the coming years, but in some cases, it'll be on an AM-FM simulcast at least in the short-term. The only team that absolutely can't move to FM for legal reasons is the Cubs. The Chicago Tribune kept 5% ownership of the team in order to keep them on WGN. They aren't allowed to buy an FM unless they sell one of their other Chicago properties. Fat chance of that happening.

Well, I figured that was obvious.

Picky, picky...

Their other Chicago properties are a newspaper and a television station, and the websites associated with both. Given that advertisers are fleeing newspapers and radio, maybe eventually Tribune becomes only a TV/Internet company and sheds both the Trib and WGN Radio.
