WFNK vs. WBLM... The Battle of The Commercial-Free Hours

NHRadio said:
Vox was doing "93 minute music marathons" after Imus on WNHI Belmont NH as early as 1997.

Vox didn't own WNHI in 1997.

The whole "commercial free marathon" idea is hardly original. I worked at a Q-format station in the late 70s, and we were doing "commercial free power hours" even back then.

Dear WW,

I understand that everybody in the market is doing some kind of commercial free programming. My point was that 'BLM might well be charging advertisers to subsidize the time. "This hour of cf rock has been made possible by Raoule's Adobe Siding" (ca-ching!) If Nassau hasn't yet picked up on that notion, they probably will.
And BTW adbuyer1......sorry, I don't know Jack. (How's that's for a set-up?)

You're right. It was under Radioworks at that time. Guess I'm getting old.

Welcome back to Maine. I like the Biff name. Nice. You really need to get up to speed. Mr. Warrior is very right.
Best Regards

What is wrong with commercials? Marketing a station via Commercial Free positioning has the uncommunicated supposition that commercials are bad. I don't get it. How many people would be willing to "work" in radio if non of these stations played commercials and therefore had no money for salaries?

Whenever I hear commercial free, all I can think of is the 1980's movie FM that goofed on all the stereotypes in radio broadcasting. The self rightous PD zealot, the idiot station manager/sales weasel, the even bigger idiot corp. big-wig and most importantly, the out of touch owner who shows up at the end of the movie and let's Jeff have the PD job back.

I'll listen to a zillion commercials in a row if the station is programmed well, sounds good and it's content interest me. The inherent flaw in this commercial free strategy is the delusion that listeners want to hear just the programming....especially when it's bad. He's a positioning statement we'll never hear: "WE PLAY LESS COMMERCIALS SO YOU CAN HEAR MORE PROGRAMMING THAT SUCKS."

It's too bad that PDs can't look at themselves for poor exectution, poor marketing, poor content that results in poor ratings and they have the gall to point over to the sales cubicles and blame that side of the building- and propose to kill the goose that lays the golden egg.

What other job has such lack of accountability? Besides the current Presidency?

Hey, why not put up a format of nothing BUT COMMERCIALS?

works for the weather channel ;D

I remember a time in the distant past when commercials integrated quite nicely into the format. Of course they were mostly for head shops and boutiques that sold sand candles and granny dresses, but I believe the stoned out audience appreciated the effort the stoned out air staff put into maintaining consistency. I hear tell that the first time 'BLM ever aired a MacDonald's commercial it raised quite a ruckus with the listeners.

As time went by I can remember taking perverse pleasure in hearing beer ads in Morning Drive. Speaking of which, does anyone remember the Schlitz Beer ads done by Fats Domino? You'd think it would be common sense to ascertain that the celeb you hire to pitch your product could at least pronounce the name of said product. Good stuff!
