WFSB 1984: Business story about WTIC-TV-61 sign-on

Thank you for this new clip! It sure opened my eyes to see Jim Vicevich standing in front of WTNH-TV! This piece, however, never directly mentioned WVIT-TV (NBC) channel 30. Also, how was WTNH-TV ever going to get a solid rating in Hartford, when they're based 42 miles down I-91 in New Haven?
 
Jim (heard middays on WTIC) has certainly come a long way from Channel 3! God bless him.

Channel 30 was a minor player in 1984 for several reasons, mainly being a UHF competing against two Vs. Many people were still watching over the air, or had been cable subscribers for just a few years. 30 didn't start enhancing their news department until Viacom bought the station in 1979. NBC was a last place network in September, 1984, but things started changing when The Cosby Show premiered that fall for a good Thursday night line-up of comedies and a 10:00 p.m. drama.

The TV market is Hartford-New Haven. I know Fairfield County is not a part of the market, but don't know where the other boundaries are.
 
Our market is Connecticut minus Fairfield County. Yes, Enfield's local ABC station may technically be WTNH, but they're far closer to WGGB in Springfield, MA. I also know that Hartford and New Haven were separate for TV markets until maybe the early 1950s or so.
 
I've kind of noticed that with Connecticut, on how their market is just the entire state without southwestern CT.

Does Fairfield County still get Hartford/New Haven stations? How often do the NYC stations cover Fairfield County?

Kind of like how all of eastern/SE Mass is in the Boston market minus Bristol County...
 
My friend in Stratford still gets WTNH, WCTX and WFSB 3-4, a.k.a. their channel with the Fairfield County advertising. I'm guessing he also gets channels 20, 30 and 61 as well. There was talk some time back that WTIC was going to be taken off of Cablevision in Fairfield County. He hasn't mentioned anything to me about that. In fairness, he doesn't live all that far from CT Route 15 or the Sikorsky Bridge. You could see into Milford (New Haven County) if you were on top of his house.

Coincidentally, WVIT ended up getting the syndication rights to "Cosby" reruns when they first became available.
