That makes WFSB Hartford (CBS 3) and WMTW Portland (ABC 8) as the only two stations I know of that start local Saturday morning news at 5 a.m. WMTW also starts its Sunday morning news at 5 a.m. Both days, they always have a reporter out in the field at a walk-a-thon or beach clean up or some event with the live truck... which requires the organizers of the event to get people there super early to be on TV. It seems on weekdays, 4:30 a.m. is the standard starting time for morning news in most markets. But every station I know of, other than WFSB and WMTW, start their local news on weekend mornings at 6 a.m. or later.
I guess there's a lot of pressure on local stations to carry the entire network weekend morning shows in addition to their own local weekend morning news. So maybe this will start a trend on many network affiliates. Start your local news at 5 a.m. to get all your commercials in, then go to the network morning shows at 7 a.m., then after that, you can run infomercials, or E/I kids shows, or whatever else you want. Of course in western time zones, you may have to start the local weekend morning news early so you can carry network sports that start at 1 p.m. in the east but 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
