WGBH looks at Pirate Radio in Boston.....

I read about it here on this web. Believe it happened in the Orlando area probably about 5 years ago. Glenn Hauser even covered it on his World of Radio program.
When the FCC (or any other government agency including the FBI) perform a 3AM raid, they will often enlist the aid of local law enforcement.
I'll keep looking for the link.

DIY Media is VERY PRO-pirate...and not an unbiased source.

I don't see any sourcing for the "gun to the head" or "gunpoint" claims.

when the FCC handles pirates, from what I've read of busts.
If you're a minority they'll come in and look around and ask, "where's your EAS box?"
If you're a white American male, they'll kick the door in at 3AM and point a gun at your wife's head. (Happened in FLA.)

That's a racist statement unless you have considerable documented proof that goes beyond a convoluted, 17 year old, article on a pro-pirate biased website.

Fifth paragraph: gunpoint. There was a video on youtube of the guy's wife referring to the gun at her head.
Well, I'm sure if it was a government article, they would spin it in their direction.
Regarding the EAS box. I heard that story from a Midwest Communications salesman, who was contacted after a visit from the FCC, at the unlicensed station in NC.
It was a Black gospel station that was very popular in the market. Probably had a lot of local talent.

Speaking of pirates, B87.7 and Big City (now on 88.5) have been back up and running for a couple weeks now. The high profile raid a few months back only kept them down for what, a couple months? How many more raids is it going to take for them to get the hint... I think both of them have been taken down 3-4 times each at this point.

Its not unusual for gov't agents to have their guns drawn when conducting a raid- of any kind. His wife is not guilty of any crime. In America we do not prosecute relatives of criminals unlike other countries.
Most likely the cop who pulled a gun on her was an INCEL (google that tern) who hates women anyway and was just waiting for an opportunity to pop her head off.
As for racism of the FCC in how they treat different ethnicities, that is not unusual. In my own township they let illegals drive without drivers' licenses. They are considered diplomats or ambassadors, since they don't fit in any other category. And are therefore exempt from prosecution from misdemeanors.
But, if you're a citizen, you better have your papers ready!

If the pirate radio facility was in their house (sounds like it was) she is party to a felony. Once again: Did she file police brutality charges? If you or anyone have a beef with the police, and you feel they're treating people incorrectly, just file charges. Otherwise, you're just whining.

I think going after landlords is a great move. If a landlord knows there is or will be illegal activity on their property with fed involved it might help. Landlords want to receive their rent check......and have everything quiet with no problems and no liability!

What happens when the pirate facility is located in a private house?

What happens when the pirate facility is located in a private house?

Hmmmm...is the operator the owner of the house?

There seem to be a case of a pirate in Dorchester a few years ago that had it in his "Aunties" house....and she had no idea what it meant to be licensed / not licensed. It didn't take long for "auntie" to tell him to "get all that crap out of her house" cause she "wasn't risking her property so he can play radio!" LOL!

If he IS the operator of the station AND the homeowner, and hasn't paid his fine, a lien on the house would probably do wonders!

What happens when the pirate facility is located in a private house?

If the legislation that appears to be ready to clear the House gets through Congress and the President signs it, then the case appears similar to another person's car being used to commit a crime: forfeiture or a lien for the amount of the fine.

In this case with 87.7 and 88.5, the landlord has to be in on it. They continue to come back on the air from the same exact location.

Often, the landlords are several states away. Checking the Hillsborough County, FLA. records reveals the Tampa Part Pirate filed bankruptcy at some point. But it may have been as a result of the real estate collapse several years ago.
Other infractions are mostly traffic violations.

So a Candidate for Suffolk District Attorney was a guest this morning... I think its time just to give up-these guys have been operating for 12 years and have a massuve follwoing. THey' had multiple legitimate guests and interviews and fill a hole in the Boston radio market-Mainstream Urban AC...its has enough influence for political candidates to know of it.

"Join the convo w/ Boston's Unapologetic Urban Voice & Boston's Progressive Suffolk County DA Candidate @McAuliffeforDA!

We're talking #CivilAssetForfeiture

A District Attorney’s goal should be justice. Not convictions! ⚖

#UrbanAgenda #BOSpoli #DAdifference"

-Operating for 12 years.
-Massive following (No one know what their following is)
-"Legitimate" guests
-Fill the hole in the market.

None of which change the fact that they are operating illegally.

Are we heading further into an era where people proclaim "the rules/laws don't apply to me"?

Because I have been speeding for 12 years, does that mean I should be allowed to continue to do so?

The people can proclaim whatever they want. When they get caught, they are as guilty as everyone else.

Any guests, especially political candidates, should understand that by being a guest they are participating in a federal crime.

Heres the thing...I am happy with the station. Obviously, its illegal and anything that happens to them within the confines of the law is fair game. Period. I get it, they get it- but we/they do not really care.

No damage is being done to other stations or basic city functions. No one is truly being harmed you can extrapolate and try to imagine what damages they're doing but that's really not what this is about. People on this board and other radio stations who fear thewy are losing listeners are the only people who care-truly. This is why WGBH seem sympathetic to them because they writing as best they can from the normal person POV. THis is why they hav e candidates on the air. THis is why the FCC only shows up once every few years. It just honestly not a big deal, illegal for sure but why arre you choosing to side with big corporations rather than the interests of your fellow statespeople?

Leaving this station alone would be a good exercise in selective enforcement-many people here are acting like the radio police because they don't like scofflaws-I get it. But I cannot understand the hate the station gets. I honestly beleive if youve been speeding for 12 yeares and havent caused an accident then yes you hsould be allowed to keep speeding. In fact my guess is that you do occasionally speed and have been doing so for much more than 12 years. FIre works are illegal-yet every year on the Esplanade...

. It is the enforcement of nonessential violations like these that further STRENGTHEN anti-law-enforcement feelings amongst black people, and ultimately STRENGTHEN the station. Hunting down landlords is an incredibly inefficient use of taxpayer money-attempting to shut this station down again is a waste of taxpayer money.

The reality of the situation is these people pay a fee to various people in the Dorchester area to be able to set up shop at any time/anywhere. This is what I have heard from people on the street who are involved in Boston's Hip Hop scene (Producer/DJs). As long as its JAMN 945 and HOT969 serve as the hip hop outlets this will happen. FCC is bringing one bucket to a flood.

Yes they have a large following OF COURSE. THeye got 10s and thousands of likes and you can ehre them all the time in Boston south of the Pike in the booming cars. Infinitely more often than JAMN-infact i have a friend who works in the finance sector on State Street. We grew up on B87 - hes the one who messaged me telling me they were back on air and prompted me to come to this board, unsurprisingly people are willing to try to put an end to what hasd become/is becoming a part of the city's culture for better or for worse... we can extrapolate from their twitter and Facebook numbers which would indicate theyre roughly half as popular as WAAF and much more popular than WKAF,
