WGN Sets 9/1/20 Debut of 'Bias Free' Newscast

Wait Nexstars "News Nation" was also going to include people from the other Nexstar Owned stations doing segments for that show though besides WGN-TV.

Call me cynical, but isn't marketing something as unbiased inevitably going to lead to accusations of bias?

People who don't believe the media can be unbiased aren't going to believe said media when they claim to be.

interesting idea to hire "rhetoricians" to review scripts. Who will review story selection? There are those who believe the coverage of certain stories (and the exclusion of others) represents a news bias.

The slogan "Fox News: We Report, You Decide" seemed to work out OK for them.

Hiring "rhetoricians" to make sure its bias-free could be interesting but we'll see how that plays out.

If they ban the verb "slam" from their copy and lower-thirds, the world will be a better place.

WGN America, Nexstar Media Group’s cable network reaching 75 million television households across the country, today announced the anchor teams and correspondents for its live three-hour primetime national newscast, News Nation, which debuts Tuesday, Sept. 1.

The team is led by veteran journalists and weekday anchors, Joe Donlon and Marni Hughes, breaking news anchor Rob Nelson and chief meteorologist Albert Ramon, who collectively bring nearly 80 years of experience in television news to their roles and have covered everything from Presidential elections to hurricanes and the current coronavirus pandemic.

The weekend News Nation team will be led by anchors Rudabeh Shahbazi and Nichole Berlie, breaking news anchor Aaron Nolan and meteorologist Gerard Jebaily.

Crew that will join News Nation on Nexstar.

Very good anchor team, both northwest vets. Donlon with 20 years as anchor at Kgw Portland, then Wgn local and Hughes with many years at Q13 fox in Seattle.

“News Nation,” the national news startup at WGN America, has tapped Chicago media personality Ji Suk Yi as the face and voice of breaking news cut-ins in the morning for NewsNationNow.com and its app. Her last appearance as evening host at news/talk WGN 720-AM will be July 10. After stints with the Sun-Times and “Windy City Live” on ABC-owned WLS-Channel 7, Yi joined WGN Radio as a morning show contributor in July 2019. She’s been hosting evenings since March. Yi, who emigrated from South Korea as a child and grew up in rural North Carolina, attended Salem College in Winston-Salem, and earned a law degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. WGN America cable network and WGN Radio are owned by Nexstar Media Group. “‘News Nation’ is a marquee asset for Nexstar and we were thrilled that Ji got this opportunity,” said Mary Sandberg Boyle, general manager of WGN Radio. From studios in Chicago, “News Nation” plans to debut September 1 with a three-hour nightly newscast.

Ji Suk Yi will join News Nation on Nexstar.

The debut of NewsNation was fairly impressive. The graphics remind me of the package used by Tegna, oddly.
I tuned out after the first half-hour, but I will watch again. Here's the rundown of the stories they covered:

They spent the first 10 minutes or so were focused on the events of the last week in Kenosha, WI, including separate reporter packages covering Pres. Trump's comments today, and a live report regarding the Black Lives Matter and related protests.

The next story was regarding Portland's riots from last night, where rioters attempted to burn down the mayor's apartment building, with a pre-recorded package from Portland.

After that, a well-researched package profiled recent police officer injuries, and one death last weekend in St. Louis.

A coronavirus update followed, showing a clip from a speech Dr. Deborah Birx gave in Chicago.
A look at severe weather in north Texas preceded the first commercial break, some 21 minutes into the show.

After the break, a national news whiparound highlighted stories in Missouri, Florida, and Louisiana, lasting about 3 minutes before the second break.

The second-half hour started with a package focused on damage and recovery efforts from Hurricane Laura.

Just watched first hour

I just watched the first hour of WGN America's "Newsnation". Interesting approach as it feels both like a national newscast and a local newscast. They definitely are doing national news, but the flow and look seem more like a nice local news operation, even interaction with the weather anchor. I am somewhat impressed with this out of the box. The anchors (WGN's Joe Donlon, and former KCPQ Seattle anchor Marni Hughes) are quite good. This may have been a very smart move by Nexstar.

NewsNation has an "All News Channel" feel to it. If All News Channel was still around, this is what it'd look like.
