WGNY 1220 Wants to go to 10,000 Watts

According to the National Radio Club, WGNY 1220 Wants to go to 10,000 Watts...wouldn't this cause day time interference ?

APPLICATIONS
1220 WGNY NY Newburgh - Applies for U4 10000/180

I think this would affect 1220 WQUN in Hamden,Connecticut quite adversely.

It doesn't. The interfering contours don't even quite touch. WGNY's tightest spacings are to the 1230s in Hudson and White Plains, and it clears those as well. The increase from 5kw to 10kw only pushes the contours out a couple of miles in any given direction - doubling the power doesn't double the coverage.

Ok then so why bother ? I wonder if they would still build second adjacent 1200 in Highland if this application is approved.

Mr. Fybush is right. However, to the poster that inquired why doubling the power may be a bother..........
While WGNY will range a few (or more than a few) miles in direction, the power increase will solidify it's present contour: it will become louder and stronger where it is heard right now.

In order for an AM station to "double" its contour it has to increase it's wattage 10 times.
Example: if a 5,000 watt station wanted to go 50,000 watts, it would, in theory increase it's coverage by twice. Of course, directionality and ground conductivity has a lot to do with it, but that is the general rule of thumb.
