WHAS in El Cajon (E of San Diego), CA 2013-01-25 on PL-398mp+SAT

Apparently the board had indigestion when I posted this last night, so I'm reposting ...

Hi all,

So I was listening to Dave Ramsey on 840 KXNT North Las Vegas on the evening of
January 25th as I usually do, and suddenly heard "Eighty-Four W-H-A-S" in the
background. I didn't have the camera running at the time, but I had noticed the
signal in the background of KXNT had been there for a while.

So I quickly set up the camera & recorded several segments over the next few
hours. I have just now had time to extract short clips with IDs, so here's the
video ...

http://youtu.be/fbM6qSyEZbU

There are WHAS mentions at 0:02, 1:32, a couple within a few seconds at 2:11,
and a KXNT TOH ID at 0:19.

Peak signal indicated on the PL-398mp (aided by the SAT) from KXNT is 78 dBµ at
0:53. You can probably hear how strong KXNT's signal is here, too - making WHAS
tough to hear. ;)

This set a new record for domestic DX to the east of me, previously held by 720
WGN and 780 WBBM, both approximately 1700 miles from me. Both were heard with a
Panasonic RQ-SW20 (filter about as wide as a stock Sony SRF-M37W) and SAT
several years ago. WBBM was pulled out from under KKOH Reno and local 760 KFMB
splash, and WGN was bagged one Monday morning when KDWN Las Vegas was off the
air.

My all-time DX record still stands at 8344.5 miles, held by 1575 VOA in
Thailand. Video at http://youtu.be/xPODlMA1_Q4 of that reception in the early
morning on 2012-09-15 a little before sunrise.
My current DX record under a strong signal / local's "passband" (in this case
running IBOC) is 5585 miles, held by 594 JOAK Tokyo, Japan, out from under 5 kW
600 KOGO San Diego, CA, 7.7 miles W/SW of me. Audio clip at
http://www.mediafire.com/?4dqx65cf85glo83 (skip ahead a minute) from 2010-11-06
early morning.

Nice job pianoplayer! WHAS is one of my most wanted on the AM dial. I've been trying for years, but I can't get through Seaside and Las Vegas, and sometimes Colfax, yet. A DXer in my area had 1650 KSVE El Paso, TX the other night, and likely WYLL Chicago on 1160!

Great catch and great video! :)

I heard the ID's that you mentioned too.

I think I'm going to start using my loop antenna at night from now on, as I thought it only helped with daytime reception.

Awesome! I couldn't hear the WHAS mention in the first :02, but I heard the other two later in the clip.

Keep trying for WHAS, west coasters! Helpful hint. They air a TON of basketball on this station.

I had some type of basketball on 840 Friday night. Couldn't tell who was playing - but it could have been anyone being Friday night HS basketball night.

Thanks for the compliments, guys. :)

Lawppy, the first mention is something like "hit us online at WHAS.com"

Crainbebo I'm surprised Vegas is such a pest for you. I'm only about 275 miles from KXNT (I believe you're just a wee bit farther?) and they blast about 125 kW toward me at night. Considering how well WHAS was doing vs KXNT at times (better than in the video clips I posted), I would think they'd be dominating the channel there. :) (well ok maybe not quiiite like KIXI or KKXA ;) ) Good luck on WHAS! :) Maybe practice on KOKC? ;) (It's a nightly regular here.)
I've also had Chicago several years ago - in the form of 720 WGN and 780 WBBM. WGN was heard when I caught KDWN off the air for maintenance, and WBBM was dug out from a nulled KKOH and splatter from local 760 KFMB on my barn-door-wide radio. This time I was NOT cheating by catching KXNT off the air. ;)

One of my next desired midwest stations is 760 WJR Detroit, MI, about 1945 mi, 61° from me. Local KFMB is a bit of a pest, being only 7.3 miles away and 50kW at night (5kW daytime), but at a heading of 321° so maybe they're somewhat nullable. Also I did catch Denver last year one afternoon while KKZN was still on day 50kW pattern (yes, skywave can do it that early in the day - sunset's considerably later in San Diego than Denver), so I would hope WJR may be possible. Usually so far I've heard Spanish on 760 when nulling KFMB at night, though.

I can't speak for Crainbebo, but I'm also located in the Puget Sound region, and 840 is generally dominated by the two Oregon oldies stations, KSWB Seaside and KKNX Eugene, with the talkers (Colfax and Las Vegas) behind them when propagation's in. KXNT doesn't exactly pound in, but comes in like a moderately weak regional at best -- at least the times I've logged it.

I'll have to keep my ears peeled next time I tune 840. Last time I logged WHAS was in the 1980's (I also logged WLW Cincinnati the same evening). It would be nice to hear them again.
