Must be tough to hear WABC with WAVA right next door.

I'm about 30 miles from WAVA's transmitter which is just NW of DC according to Radio-Locator. I meant to say 770 WAVA not 779, it was a typo. I have the radio's narrow IF setting on.

My one experience with WJR in the daytime is the time I had a connecting flight in Cleveland. This was in May of 1997.

It was around early afternoon and I had an hour or so layover until I boarded my connecting flight so I sat there in the terminal and got out my Sony Walkman.

I was surprised to find how WJR had such a good signal, especially considering how it was inside the airport as AM reception is not generally as good inside airports.

WJR is like a local in Cleveland. It's a straight water path over Lake Erie.

Same in Conneaut, an hour northeast of Cleveland. I was up there about four weeks ago and was shocked how well it and CKLW come in there (although I should not have been). I personally have heard WJR south of Portsmouth, Ohio daytime, and easily on I-275 in Cincinnati's northern suburbs.
Other AM/FM heard beyond 60 miles here in Thornville, Ohio, 30 miles east of Columbus ...
- WKRC (550/Cincinnati): Not a great signal (3.5-4 out of 10) but very listenable daytime. Disappears at sunset.
- WKBN (570/Youngstown): Same as WKRC, but slightly weaker.
- WLW: Self explanatory.
- WJR: 5 out of 10. Also comes in well at night. When it ran IBOC, the sidebands were very audible here on 750 and 770.
- WKNR (850/Cleveland): Very strong, 7 of 10 here daytime.
- KDKA: Very weak and hardly listenable.
- WTAM (1100/Cleveland): About the same as WKRC.
- WWVA (1170/Wheeling): Ditto.
Those are the big ones ... there might be a few small regional channels I am missing. Not much distant FM comes in here ... we're at the very western edge of the Appalachian foothills and while we get a straight shot of all things Columbus, not much distant from the east comes in. The farthest I can think of is WQKT (104.5) from Wooster, which carries country and a lot of Cleveland sports.

Does WJR is have HD?? It still says on the Wiki

I don't think it's been in HD in two years anyway. I've heard normal sidebands from WJR on my visits to northern Ohio in that time.
As far as the Chicago 50Ks, we're about right on the line where they die. I can hear WSCR, WGN and very rarely WBBM (there's a local on 790) daytime with my motor off less than 10 miles northwest of here, but I've never heard any of them right here in my town. There is a park-and-ride about four miles north of here along I-70 where I've heard WSCR daytime.

This is true. WLS doesn't begin to be heard until at least 50 miles west of Columbus, maybe farther, because of WRFD. Even up near Lima, listening to WLS involves putting up with a good deal of WRFD slop, as does WGN because of bleedover from WJYM.

Borderblaster probably meant Charleston, WV, since WCHS is located there.

From near Worcester MA I prev. indicated a limited # of stations beyond 60 mi namely Hartford and NYC. Playing w/ the radio at midday I got a very weak WICC, Bridgeport Ct at about 90 mi, a very weak WGY Schenned-Albany at about 120 mi, really weak Hartfords on 910 and 1410 from 65 mi or so. None of these stations would peak virtually anyone's interest-way too weak. I "hear" them but that's about it.
On FM I got WAMC from Mt. Greylock, a daily visitor I had forgotten about from about 75 mi. But there are a lot more and stronger NPR stations. I do remember analog channel 19 being a beast in Central Mass.
But what stations does one listen to on a regular-occasional basis beyond 60 mi? My only 2 are WFAN and WCBS from about 140 mi whose stations are "clean" enough to listen/comprehend every word. Despite being a Boston fan (sorry for the pun), WFAN in NYC is OK too. Good topic.

Radioman,

Yes I do get DC, however it doesn't come in from 8 am to 4 pm. 1500 is my strongest DC signal.

Ok. I was wondering if you were close enough to get it mid day, but ground wave on 1500 can be poor.

Just S of Charleston, SC: Too many to list. There are easily 20 signals that are very listenable, with another 40-50 across the 3 bands weaker. A lot of these are suspectible to electrical noise. On a good radio, as far S as Miami can be heard daytime. A good radio can get Tampa's 820. Orlando also comes in, especially 540 and 580.

This is just AM:

550 WAYR Orange Park/Jacksonville, religious, very listenable.
560 WVOC Columbia, weak, mixes with Miami where I live
570 CMCA, loud, can hear the ticks of the clock
600 WBOB Jacksonville, talk (along with NASCAR races and FSU sports), listenable.
630 WBMQ Savannah, news/talk (UGA sports and minor league baseball), very listenable.
690 WOKV Jacksonville, news/talk (Jaguars), very strong, stronger than a couple of the semi-locals.
760 WEFL Tequesta/West Palm, sports, weaker, but good signal for 3000 watts.
790 Brunswick
800 Palatka, FL
900 Savannah (only good by beach)
930 Jacksonville (weaker than others)
1030 Oviedo/Orlando
1080 Johnsonville, SC (religious
1110 Charlotte (WBT, stronger inland)
1130 Hilton Head
1150 Daytona Beach (WNDB, pretty good by beach, carries almost every NASCAR race)
1230 Savannah OR New Smyrna Beach, FL
1290 Savannah
1320 Jacksonville
1420 St. Augustine
1440 Brunswick (in some areas)
1570 Fernandina Beach, FL
1600 Jacksonville

That's just AM.
