What are the best affordable manufacturers' models of radios?...

a) What are the best affordable manufacturers' models tabletop or boombox types of radios available with FM, AM, Hybrid Digital HD radio?...

b) What are the best dealers besides Crutchfield and Zappos?...

Why is this on the Boston board? Are you looking for local recommendations?

It would make sense if HD in HD Radio stood for hybrid digital because hybrid digital does as good a job as two words can do of describing the complex HD Radio system. Unfortunately, HD Radio is, AFAIK, a registered trademark of iBiquity, the company that developed the system, owns the patents, and licenses the system to radio stations and equipment manufacturers (including receiver manufacturers). AFAIK, iBiquity says that the letters in its registered trademark stand for nothing--they are just letters. They don't stand for high definition, which is what most people who THINK they know believe HD stands for (the HD in HDTV, which is NOT an iBiquity trademark, DOES stand for high definition) and they don't stand for hybrid digital. I don't think that iBiquity has taken legal action against anyone who says that HD in HD Radio stands for something, but in this litigious society, I don't think it's wise to tempt fate;>(

The "HD" in "HD Radio" doesn't officially stand for anything. It's a marketing ploy, and a reasonably smart one since both stations and listeners have taken it to mean whatever they want it to mean: "hybrid digital", "high definition", etc etc.

Target carries the Sony tabletop HD Radio receiver with a built-in iPod dock. I don't know if they actually sell 'em in stores anymore, but on their website it's $180...a steal given what a fabulous receiver it is (one of the best).

I have several Boston Acoustics Receptor HD units in my office and house. They're so-so on AM but, with a proper antenna, quite good on FM. Unfortunately, BA discontinued them several months ago. Maybe on eBay? :-\

Radio Shack sells in-store a Jensen HD Radio that also has an iPod dock and supports iTunes Tagging, which is pretty cool. I don't know how good a receiver it is but presumably it's pretty decent; most HD Radios have proven to be good receivers when you've got a decent antenna attached.
