What are the locations of the Portland FM transmission sites?

I know that the Stonehenge tower is on council crest, but does anyone have a specific location?

Also, where are the other towers located? I think I saw a picture once; they all were lined up along a cliff side facing out towards the city if I recall.

Stonehenge: Latitude 45-29-20, Longitude 122-41-40; Sylvan: 45-30-58/122-43-59; Skyline: 45-31-21/122-44-45. All full power Portland based FMs are now located at one of these three sites. There are additional TV towers in the same area and of course, AM.

AM broadcasting from the Tulatin Hills? I always thought the AM towers were supposed to be down in low, wet regions ;)

I believe 88.7 KLVP is near Mt. Hood however. But that's the only exception to the West Hills/Stonehenge site.

There are several stations on Mt. Hood. The strongest ones' 60dbu just barely reach Gresham. They are rimshots at best. KLVP(K-Love)is now on the Skyline tower at 97.9. 88.7 is now KZRI(AirOne).

I will have to try to find that one on Google Maps. Is there much luck in picking up the Seattle stations in Portland? Portland radio works well for me in Tacoma, Washington. I won't touch the Seattle dial.

Yes. Especially the southern rimshots. KOMO is sometimes local-like in Portland on 97.7, ditto KYNW and KXXO (when they are on Rooster Rock!) I have picked up KZOK, KUOW, KPLU and KMPS in the past and maybe more from Portland as well as 92.9 KISM Bellingham (200+ mi).

Any sign of CIOC? Or does KUPL make it impossible?

Long, long ago, I had a large 175 mile antenna and could pick up certain Seattle stations(KTW, for one, just to tell you how long ago this was)and very late at night, Vancouver. Generally, Seattle Proper stations don't make it down here, to the extent that 101.1, 101.9 and 103.3 at least USED to get into the south end of Tacoma.

KUPL makes that impossible. I think I have heard KLCK 98.9 down there before.
KINK is heard in Seattle, you just have to find where. It comes in certain spots. Hood Canal was a good one.
The same with KXL, KKRZ and KKCW.

I've got one more question for those of you who live in the Portland area. Which site is the best?

I live up north near Seattle, but I seem to have plenty of luck pulling in radio stations from the Sylvan and Skyline towers (which is more than I can say for the Stonehenge site).

At 386 meters, Stonehenge has the same HAAT as Cougar, which could affect line-of-sight and signal strength. Sylvan is at 501.5 meters and Skyline, 470. There are areas close in, where the TV towers are blocked but there's a clear shot from Stonehenge, which still makes it down to Salem. There's really nothing wrong with any of those sites.

Before the 91.5 hispanic translator was placed on Capitol, KOPB signal outdid KINK's. Could be a taller height on the tower or a better antenna array. KXL would reach Olympia/Centralia if KGHO wasn't on 101.1.

I can't think of any reason that KOPB's 73KW @ 470 meters HAAT would come in better than KINK's 100 @ 501.5, other than a specific position on the wave length. The two towers are fairly close together. At that distance, I don't see how it could make much difference. Does it come in better than KKRZ or KKCW?

Well, take a drive up north, for starters. KKRZ and KKCW are either nulled out by other errata thanks to FCC crowding or those stations have changed antenna arrays/propagation? KLOO used to come in better a few years ago too. Maybe Everett Helm was/is a better engineer for OPB than KINK's/Alpha in-house or outsourced service, my 02 cents

Nevertheless, if it's outside the 60dbu contour, it doesn't matter because it isn't protected and never has been. As they say in the crime shows, "I'm sorry for your loss.". :)

That really was a non-answer, since you don't live up here and used cliches instead of actually being in a position to report. Protection aside, it was receivable before there was crowding of the spectrum. "Thanks for playing".
