What are the "seasons" for radio? (how many weeks per year etc)...?

Hi guys,

Just a newbie question here: Are there "seasons" in commercial FM radio (United States)? And if so, what is a typical "season" (ex: sept to June? + summer shows ) How many weeks, from when to when... I would appreciate any info.

Thanks in advance

Well, summer is generally considered Memorial Day to Labor Day. Then there's fall. Or Football season starting in August. Christmas or "the holidays" can start as early as Halloween.

Thanks,

Say when a show is signed on for a year, does it mean that it goes on for something like 39 weeks? (with the remaining 13 being the summer?)

I'm not following you. Syndicated radio shows don't as a rule take summers off. A syndicator needs to plan for 52 shows per year if weekly. Syndicated talk hosts will take days and weeks off at various times with subs being brought in. Usually almost all will take the last week of the year off.

If I get the gist of the conversation correctly, you're equating radio to TV. It's not. There are no "seasons" like in TV. When you commit to a radio show, you do so under the terms of an agreement or contract. Since radio is not generally episodic, repeats are far less common in radio than TV. Much of radio is designed to be timely, and material becomes outdated very quickly.

Thanks for the clarification. (I do not work directly in the radio business)

For some reason I was under the impression that some of the daily show's hosts on one of the local radio stations were not there during the months of July and August and comming back in the Fall...

The sales department may think about seasons... not radio seasons.... but retailer seasons. Valentines candy and other merchandise is a season. Summer is a season for car-repair-before-your-vacation advertising, etc. etc.

If there are any "seasons" in radio it would be the "ratings seasons". Audience measurements are usually scheduled at certain times. (They do not take place 52 weeks per year.) You can pretty well be that if a radio host if absent... as in "on vation"... it is NOT ratings season.

In Markets 1-50 (except Puerto Rico) ratings go on 365 days a year, non-stop. There are 13 4-week books, and 52 weekly trend reports in the metered markets (the PPM rollout completes the Top 50 this year).

In the continuous measurement diary markets, most of the remaining 50 in the top 100, there is a 3 week hiatus at Christmas and a one week one between Spring and Summer... 48 weeks of ratings, 4 weeks blacked out.

In the 200 remaining Arbitron markets, there are 26 measured weeks a year, Spring and Fall.
