What Dallas/Ft Worth radio stations from yesteryear do you miss?

I think the concensus here is - "all of the above". Which leaves me wondering - why is Dallas radio still so much better than Houston radio - even with all the great stations of the past gone?

I mainly listened to Christian Radio when I lived in Dallas. I stated in the post that I liked the first KLTY when Jon Rivers was the morning man in 1983-1984. And a couple other stations I listened to was

KPBC on 1040 AM before they moved to 770 and became KAAM. Back then it was Contemporary Christian. And who could remember Deacon Don Evans and his "Overcomers Club"

Another station I remember was KVTT which was where I used to get the long running "Point of View" radio program. I can remember Marlin Maddoux as host and Kerby Anderson as occasional guest. Who would imagine Kerby Anderson as Host in 2012.

And going to Church every Sunday with KCBI in one of the buildings that was part of First Baptist Church of Dallas/Criswell College complex in Dallas. I know that Criswell College moved to the mid cities since I lived in Dallas and KCBI moved from 89.3 to 90.9

And also in the 80's I also was a KVIL fan

I remember KPBC well, I was living in Houston at the time, and it was a tough DX even on a Hammarlund SP-600JX. The original KLTY was really good - in the days before the praise and worship folks infiltrated and ruined CCM. I got Marlin Maddoux on KSBJ, when it was still relevant. When I lived in Dallas for nine years from 2000 to 2009, I was truly blessed by KVRK. You folks in Dallas don't know how lucky you are to have it - it is to Christian music what KZEW was to secular in the late 1970's. KVRK is playing stuff the sold out establishment Christian praise and worship folks wish would go away. They want everything to be tame and lukewarm in Christian music - take your spiritual medicine kids - while KVRK is playing much more creative music with some quality and life in it. Miss KZEW? KVRK is doing the same type of thing, but in Christian music. One classic Dallas station that still exists and innovates!

KCBI was flirting with AC CCM for a while, even earned a place on my presets - but sold out to the praise and worship junk like everybody else. At least there was KVRK to listen to.

No. Praise and worship is roughly analogous to the old "beautiful music" format. Today it is the Christian equivalent of Delilah. CCM was originally Christian top-40. It had sub genre's of AC, Hot AC, CHR, and rock. Virtually all of the AC has disappeared, replaced by praise and worship. There are very few Hot AC, CHR, or Christian rock stations. Some are on HD-2's and 3's like WPOZ Orlando - and have become so popular they put them on over the air stations. So Orlando is now bless with real CCM, Christian hip-hop, and Christian rock. I haven't listened to KLTY in a while - they are a curiosity to people here in those pockets where it comes booming in but I haven't listened to see if they are any better than local KSBJ. Down here, we are all hoping KSBJ puts their Christian rock NGEN format on some of their Houston translators.

Long explanation, I know. I don't know why the Christian labels let praise and worship hijack CCM, but it had taken a lot of pioneers in Christian radio like myself right out of the field and off the air. I won't play praise and worship on the air because it doesn't appeal to teenagers and young professionals - who are my target audience. And a quite profitable one, because they are the same demographics that secular top-40 targets.

Okay. Honestly CCM/praise & worship sounds all the same to me. I guess the equivalent would be Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, and JMoss versus Shirley Ceasar, Dottie Peoples and Rev. Clay Evans.

I get your drift - but "Spirit in the Sky" was not a CCM song. It contains heresy. So we did not play it. Praise and worship is characterized by a plodding 4:4 beat, while CCM makes use of the same anapestic beat found in secular rock music. In general - there are exceptions. Some ignorant buffoons in Christian circles circulated nonsense about the anapestic beat being evil in and of itself, and I guess almost the entirety of CCM stations listened to them. Even though the anapestic beat characteristic of secular music is centuries old, having an origin in some classical compositions. Including a few hymns.

I miss KMEZ. For some reason I always found the DJ/host's cadence so soothing when he'd announce the name of the record. It was a different intonation, a different way of saying things than the wiiiild and hiiiiiip and waaaaacky style of morning rock DJs.

And I remember the classic drag racing commercials...SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY. Does anyone else miss Green Valley Race City and the big funny car fields they'd have?

I loved Y95 when it was a Top 40 station.

Which version?

I remember that they launched as a high energy CHR with a strong rhythmic lean. Then they went to more of a mainstream, even adult-leaning approach with a significant number of oldies mixed in (for example, I remember them playing "Miracles" by the Jefferson Starship, which was over a decade old). Then they dropped the oldies and were more of a straight down the center CHR.

I liked a couple of the variants that they tried, but eventually did get tired of them changing direction every six months.

Was Y95 a high energy rhythmic lean around 1986-87? I listened to them a lot when I lived in DFW during 1987-88. This was probably during the adult leaning phase that you were refering to. I recall them playing 70s titles such as "More Than A Feeling" by Boston, "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart and Steve Miller Band "Rock 'N Me" fairly frequently among the current CHR hits. The original Kiss 106.1 (which was an adult CHR) became Oasis in 1987 and Y-95 was covering both the mainstream and adult side of CHR while The Eagle specialized more on the rock side of CHR. Oh the CHR wars between Y95 and The Eagle in the late 80s/early 90s...

It would also go to network during the news actuality feeds:
"BEEP! Cut number 2 is 12 seconds, outcue is: "the last time I'll do THAT!"
Coming down in 3, 2, 1..."

There was nothing any of the air staff could do about it because only two people at the station had been trained to program/run the automation system (3 cart carousels and 4 reel to reel decks). Touching the complicated machinery by all other personnel at the station was FORBIDDEN!!! Penalty was immediate termination. So if one of those two people were not at the station when (not if) it jumped to the network, all we could do was listen to it and giggle about the shiny, new $40,000 automation system that DIDN'T WORK PROPERLY!

Ha! I forgot about the news feeds. Even though I'm a newsie now, I liked 'PLJ better.

But during the news feeds, I'd have to listen even more intently to see what might happen next!

You could usually tell when something like that was gonna happen, because you'd hear the back-timed instrumental at some odd time during the hour.

I don't get on this board as often as I should, but as most people on this board know, I REALLY miss The Oasis.

I thought it was MUCH better when it was at 106.1 FM and it had more of a unique sound to it. When it moved to 107.5 FM, the format was tweaked and not for the better in my opinion. Although I am a huge fan of Genesis and Phil Collins, I would never associate any of their music with "Smooth Jazz".

I also miss Y-95, especially Wendy !! She was so hot back in 1988. I LOVED her poster, almost as good as Farrah Fawcett's poster back in the 70's. Yes, I'm dating myself.

I don't own an HD radio, therefore I cannot here The Oasis on their HD channel. Wish I could, it would be better than no Smooth Jazz. Right now, my push-buttons are on 92.5 Lone Star, 93.3 I-93, 100.3 Jack FM, 102.9 Mix/Now, 103.7 KVIL ( I delete this one during Christmas !! I can't handle 24/7 of Christmas music) and 101.1 WRR
