What Did You Expect? Howie Carr's Book Panned in The Boston Globe

Not that the reviewer at The Boston Globe didn't have some good points, but The Sunday Boston Globe reviewed all 4 books on South Boston and the IRISH MAFIA and generally panned Howie Carr's book.

They said it was interesting only if you did not grow up around here because most of what Carr wrote was just a compilation of some of his old newspaper columns. They did nit-pick some of the dates and times he sets forth in the book which came off as real petty by the Globe.

Howie is crying all the way to the bank but who in their right mind would pay $26.95 to read about Whitey Bulger anyway if you did grow up here. Will wait for the paper-back or for the remainder shelf sometime this summer at half the price.

Give Carr his due here. The Boston Globe is showing the sourest of grapes.
Bad form Globe !

Yup, I expected it. I will note that when the book came out it was listed
at #1 on the Globe's hardcover non fiction list (currently at #2), based on
sales at Borders, B&N, etc.

I didn't pay $26.95, I paid $17 or so via amazon.com! Whether I'm in my
right mind or not is debatable, but I think he's a good writer and I
wished he DID put together a collection of his old columns on other
stuff. Some of these can be found online at various sites (esp.
if you do a search on Free Republic)

Howie has mentioned that the Globe got some scoops in the various
Mafia and political stories, and he mentioned the Black Mass book
that had been written by a couple Globe scribes.<P ID="signature">______________

This was Carr's real opportunity to break out of Boston. He just doesn't get it.

Mailing in your column to The Herald (or using 'chump line' commentary to take up space) is one thing, putting a quickie book together won't be his ticket out of this town. Unfortunately, it seems we're stuck with him.

Gore Vidal is not shaking in his space booties wondering about competition from Carr. What's next for Howie, THE PRESIDENT OF ROCK & ROLL, ART "dealer" MYLES CONNOR TELLS ALL?

please.
