WHAT DO YOU FEEL IT TAKES TO BECOME A FEMALE SHOCK JOCK IN THE CITY?

In the past, the only real shock jock names that have really made it off the ground were all male. Even now, I am yet to hear of a true female shock jock in the city.

What do you feel it takes to become one in New York?

All it takes to be a female shock jock in New York is not be named Leslie Gold or Darian O'Toole.

All criticisms aside (positive or negative), let's at least give some respect to the latter personality listed since she recently passed away at such a young age. Just my opinion.

Thoughts and prayers to the O'Toole family... Your show still wasn't very good, sorry...

Would this qualify as a female shock jock?

First of all, Stephanie is a "she", not a "this".
Secondly, she is a political talk host.
And fyi, she hasn't been on in NY for a couple of decades.

It was just a stab at humor, don't worry about it.

But serious replies would be greatly appreciated!

Lex, I subscribe to Sirius. I stopped listening to Stern on a daily basis several months ago. Know why? Every time I tune in, it's the same shit he's done for 25 years. I don't care who the B-list chick celebrity has slept with. I care about Robin reading the news and hearing Artie joke about the stories.

Try to create some intelligent radio. It's hard enough for any station to make money today. They're less inclined to hire somebody who's going to cost them the amount of a fine.

Intelligent radio has their audience and so does "trash radio." It's easy to say that there should be more intelligent radio out there, but a good percentage of the population is less inclined to follow it and be very interested in it. Stern has loyal fans and O&A have loyal fans that will follow them to the death and buy just about anything that they plug on the air. Now THAT is business. There is a reason why names like that haven't disappeared in radio and in the media in general - they stir up hype and get people talking about things they wouldn't otherwise be talking about.

That is radio for the masses. That is what I strive to do.

Did you get to listen to Danni & Jackie during their short-lived Free-FM stint?
(Or any of Jackie Clarke's other shows during her time there?)

Fair enough. Keep in mind that you're not bulletproof. O&A got fired for a reason. So did Stern, Bubba the Love Sponge, and Star. I'm not saying that you need to be Terri Gross, but if you intend to spend the entirety of a 4-hour show talking explicitly about sex and bodily functions, people are going to stop caring very quickly.

I looked at your MySpace page. Are you even on a radio station at this point? I don't see any call letters, unless I'm an idiot and didn't see them.

No, I didn't, but I wish I have. In my opinion, Danni is hilarious (and obviously very smart).

I've done a bit of FM before as a regular DJ, but am now taking a break from it and working mostly out of radio. I decided to team up with another DJ from a station I used to be at and we're just exploring our personalities for now (since strict formatting tends to drain you). We're currently at a completely uncensored internet radio station in Jersey. A lot of the station staff has ties to O&A (as do I) and some of them also make regular appearances on the show, as well as other shows on Virus 202.

The show we currently have is not so much for people to listen to us, as it is for us to get to know one another as radio personalities and see where we go from there.

As for not being bulletproof, that's a given. Nobody in the business is. However, we're willing to take that chance.

Wow. That's actually a very good answer.

If you're tight with O&A, you should be able to get some face time with the PD of K-Rock, right? If you're as well-spoken on the radio as you were in your last post, you're already better than half the liner card crap I hear on the radio these days.

Thank you, I really appreciate that. I'm on good terms with the O&A crew and am close to a DJ at K-Rock as well, so I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. However, K-Rock isn't a station that's willing to take a rookie (which is exactly what I am when compared to most of the DJs that are and have been on WXRK). Even their weekenders are PDs at other stations. However, maybe in a good few years.

In that case, I'd recommend becoming famous for something else, and couple that with the work you've already done in radio to become a New York radio star. What station did Whoopi work for? Somebody gave her a morning show. Yes, I know it faltered. But at least you have some sort of understanding on how to do radio.

Stern no longer does radio for the masses: he lost most of his audience, Sirius lost most of its money, but Stern made a bazillion dollars when he left real radio. Meanwhile the radio world is full of lame wannabes and despite them, no one was capable of filling whatever void(s) existed in radio when Stern deserted it. This showed that, in part, people wanted to hear Stern, not some generic adolescent Jackass-style humor, which is most "shock jocks" do.

Yeah, she's got a syndicated show that only a whooping (excuse the lame pun and made-up word) 7 stations in obscure markets picked up. I'm all about experimenting on the radio and want to do well. I understand that it's a very turbulent field so I've obviously also got a degree in something else so I can still make money. ;)

Any idea where she is since she left XRK?

She didn't leave K-Rock - she's just not on the air. She's their Music/Programming Coordinator. They replaced her with a girl from the West Coast who constatly sounds like she's flirting with the listeners.
