I was shocked because I remember Mike Rowe on CBS 5 when Eye on the bay was known as Evening Magazine before he did Dirty Jobs. I never thought of Mike Rowe replacing The other guy who did the Jennings and Gibson era of world news.
Why are you shocked? Just because Mike Rowe was (and may still be) based in the Bay Area doesn't mean he can do work for other markets. I haven't heard his voice over for ABC, but he may have voiced it locally here. If not, New York and Washington are only a few hours away.
Funny - as I'm typing this, I'm hearing Rowe's
"Year-End Clearance" Ford commercial playing on the TV in the other room. I'm sure that's at least a regional ad, if not national.
Over the years. I've seen dozens of Bay Area media personalities and news reporters show up in national programming. Last weekend, I noticed Manuel Gallegos is now reporting for CBS. TJ Holmes (formerly KNTV) is a CNN anchor now. Juju Chang (KGO-TV News in the 90s) is a correspondent on 20/20. Another 20/20 correspondent is Jim Avila, who was on KCBS
radio here for years.
In many cases, these people weren't even
from the Bay Area, they merely passed through for a few years on their upward career trajectory through market #4 on the way to market #1 or #2, or even the networks.
Some leave for larger markets, then come back to the Bay Area - Wendy Tokuda and Anna Chavez come to mind.
The point is: if you're in radio or TV, moving around is a requirement of the job if you want to advance your career.
