What do you think of Mike Rowe Doing Voice over work on ABC's World News

I was shocked because I remember Mike Rowe on CBS 5 when Eye on the bay was known as Evening Magazine before he did Dirty Jobs. I never thought of Mike Rowe replacing The other guy who did the Jennings and Gibson era of world news.

Why are you shocked? Just because Mike Rowe was (and may still be) based in the Bay Area doesn't mean he can do work for other markets. I haven't heard his voice over for ABC, but he may have voiced it locally here. If not, New York and Washington are only a few hours away.

Funny - as I'm typing this, I'm hearing Rowe's "Year-End Clearance" Ford commercial playing on the TV in the other room. I'm sure that's at least a regional ad, if not national.

Over the years. I've seen dozens of Bay Area media personalities and news reporters show up in national programming. Last weekend, I noticed Manuel Gallegos is now reporting for CBS. TJ Holmes (formerly KNTV) is a CNN anchor now. Juju Chang (KGO-TV News in the 90s) is a correspondent on 20/20. Another 20/20 correspondent is Jim Avila, who was on KCBS radio here for years.

In many cases, these people weren't even from the Bay Area, they merely passed through for a few years on their upward career trajectory through market #4 on the way to market #1 or #2, or even the networks.

Some leave for larger markets, then come back to the Bay Area - Wendy Tokuda and Anna Chavez come to mind.

The point is: if you're in radio or TV, moving around is a requirement of the job if you want to advance your career.

I didn't think Mike Rowe would replace Bill Rice as the annoucer of World News. I remember Lisa Stark on KGO-TV back in 1989 doing Loma Prieta coverage. Betsy Stark was on KGO-TV or AM around the 1990's before going to ABC News. I remember Laura Marquez here in SF back in the 1990's on KGO. I wish There was an annoucement too that Bill Rice would be retiring too.

In one of those "3 degrees of...whatever" situations so common in TV and radio: last night I saw a promo for the new Good Morning America with George Stephanopoulous (sp?), revamped because Diane Sawyer has moved to World News...announced by Mike Rowe, apparently. Another regular on the revamped GMA will be JuJu Chang (formerly of KGO-TV), who I mentioned above.
