What does the proposed Tegna - Nexstar combination mean for New Orleans?

It might be interesting if this transaction is successful. WWL TV & WUPL are both Tegna owned stations while WGNO & WNOL are both Nexstar owned, meaning the combined entity could hypothetically control 4 full power TV stations in the New Orleans market (if it were legal, which it's not). Will be interesting to see if there are any license divestitures with the affiliation(s) or do they just stack all the major networks on 2 stations and sell the other 2 licenses without affiliations?

I am wondering if WUPL or WNOL will be sold. As most stuff I have seen is 2 mains and a LMA is max ownership right now on tv stations in a market.. Maybe 3 in a super big market like Dallas.
However, This would technically give 5 stations (WUPL is also broadcast on a LPTV signal in New Orleans owned by Belo). Some arguments could be said since WUPL is technically the ATSC3 station Broadcasting everyone else's ATSC3 signal, that it wont count.
But I think one will go, and my guess is WNOL will be odd man out. And/or WUPL loosing all programming IMO that is being broadcast by others to stay owned and alive .

Could WGNO be moving downtown to channel 4? Some have pointed to moving everything to Galleria, but I'd think opposite would happen .

But then, that's just my idea.

The Baton Rouge Nexstar stations recently rebranded to Louisiana First News, so I wonder if the true endgame is a regionalized set-up between the two markets.

I would expect, simply as a cost-savings measure, that everything ends up at the Galleria. Doubt Nexstar wants to worry about building ownership (especially an aging one at that) and they probably would get a nice price for it.

Any high-priced legacy WWLers are likely gone, though who’s left of that group? Farris? Mouton?

Still can’t believe the once-mighty WWL-TV will be shilling for Uncle Perry’s NewsNation. How the mighty have fallen.

There's a non-zero chance WWL-TV's news department is shuttered and turned into a mere rump for WGNO. Which is going to be absolutely shameful.
WWL-TV is a mere shadow of the monster it was in the 70's and even into the 90's. They have outgrown the building and the French Quarter is becoming a toilet. Moving the whole shebang to Metairie would be cool but a 4 station monopoly would not be good for the market and would further propel TV down the drain that radio is currently circling.

I was looking, unless FCC rules change (as they are being revisited now by the FCC), or a waiver is done (as technically WUPL is a rebroadcaster under ATSC 3 and its programming is currently fed by 3 different stations ). I think youll see WNOL and WUPL go up for sale IMO.
