Not even a sight of WJR on 760 or WLW on 700

I'm closer to both the WGN and WBBM sticks than Midway airport. Both WLW and WJR are fine every night at my QTH.

It may have changed a bit in recent years, but when I lived in Glendale Heights IL, literally in the back yard of then-WMAQ and 5-6 miles from WBBM & WGN, both WLW and WJR came in just fine at night.

Tonight, just outside Stuttgart, Germany. Here's a few of 'em.

621: France, weak
639: Czech?, Polish?, strong
648: BBC World Service: Moderate
675: Netherlands "The Arrow" Classic Rock/Oldies....weak to moderate'
693: BBC usually on top of the mess.
747: Netherlands: Strong
792: French: Strong-Moderate

Locals here include 576 (news-talk German) fairly strong, but with slop underneath, and 1143 (U.S. armed forces radio-English). Variety programming, news-talk-music (largely from the bird)...also fairly strong.

Radioman....

I'm sure you can....and in fact have done so with a communications style receiver and "big time" antenna. Actually, I'm sure its possible with much much more common equipment in "low noise" areas. Usually, however, I'm in an urban area hotel with just my fm walkman....although I'll occasionally bring my Grundig Yacht Boy over here with me. Tonight I'm in a hotel across the street from the Stuttgart airport. Steel and concrete building, but a large picture window lets lots of signals in. (And gives me a fabulous view of a parking garage).

A few other frequent nighttime catches around here (Southern Germany) include Algeria on 891, London (sports talk) on 1089 (usually very strong) and London (classic rock/oldies) on 1548. Virgin Radio from London is interesting and somewhat regular on 1215, but often takes a pounding from other stuff on the channel. Miss your NFL football games? Try the US Armed forces Germany blowtorch on 873.

Thanks for the info Cyberdad.

I did pick up WCBS-880 in downtown London in 1977 right before London sunrise.
I used a pretty good panasonic radio with a built in antenna to do it.
I'm sure if I was out in the county I could have done better.
Just wonering if it's still possible today the way all the frequencies have filled up.

Thanks.
