What DX Radio is best that is currently manufactured for AM, FM?

My Tec-Sun PL-310 came just before I left on my trip to Germany. My initial reaction is that it's an incredible little set, with two caveats: 1) I bought mine on e-Bay from an outfit in Hong Kong and the model they sent me appears to only tune to 1620, which is no good because my Part 15 is on 1640 and 2) The sound quality coming out of that tiny, tinny little speaker leaves much to be desired for general listening. But that said, I noticed two things that I think are awesome: the FM sensitivity and selectivity appear to be really good, and I loved the digital signal strength meter on AM. I think that will be a very useful tool for my Part 15 AM operation (if I can get a unit that can tune to 1700).

If you have the AM set to 9 kHz steps (for fast tuning), it only goes up to 1620; however, you can change it to 10 kHz steps in which case it does go all the way up to 1700. You push the number 3 - either with the radio off or in conjunction with the function key (I can't recall). But it actually says 9/10 kHz above the number 3 key so that you can make the switch. As there's no expanded band service in the 9 kHz zone, it's routine for international radios to only go up to 1620 in that mode. But it absolutely goes up to 1700 in the 10 kHz mode that we'd use here in the Americas.

Since you'll be in Germany, perhaps you might wish to keep it in the 9 kHz setting until you get home.

Personally, I only use it with earbuds/headphones and it has pretty good sound through the phones.

My Realistic DX-380 is crapping out on me, AM is fine..but FM is a different story

I can't really explain what it's doing

Any cheap one's..I don't really want to go the ebay route
