I believe preference for dial position was much more of an issue in the days of analog ("slide rule") tuning dials. There was just a natural aversion by people to tune all the way to one end or the other of the dial.
Also not mentioned here is interference to FAA facilities. In my observation over the years, it seems more high-end-of-the-dial facilities garner the ire of the FAA radio people regarding interference to their receive facilities. If you've not been through one of these, I don't recommend it.
