I thought it was just on the Bubble!! Perhaps the shock value died quickly.
A modern day Archie Bunker only has so much to say or do, I suppose.
I guess they could spin the show off into the kid finally getting a job...that gets outsourced...

The show did OK, rating around where the rest of the CBS comedies rated, but CBS is known for cancelling the "lowest" rated of the comedies, regardless of whether it does OK or not. In years past, they only pick up one of their new comedies per year, and this year it was Mike & Molly.
The funny thing is, other than the title, the sitcom was pretty bland and tame. Two and a Half Men, Big Bang Theory, and even How I Met Your Mother take more risks than SMDS ever did.
My post is mostly in jest............because as I remember CBS promoed and hyped this series
to the max (right in the American Idol category). And the show was doing great at first.........
Does this remind you of anything else. It reminds me of NBC's THE VOICE. Hyped and promoed
to death...........doing great in the ratings "right now" just as $#*! did at first. I wouldn't be suprised
if THE VOICE eventually goes this same route.

I think the series held it's own, but it wasn't a concept that translated to network TV very well, because of how toned down it had to be. The twitter feed did so well, because it was everything network TV isn't. It took chances, pushed the envelope, and had no "Standards and Practices" department to go through.
I think this is why, at least for a while, premium TV was growing while broadcast was shrinking. Now, of course, the economy is in the toilet, and people are looking for any way to cut back. People WANT edgy TV (by in large, there are going to be exceptions to that). I think if we can adopt a model that keeps TV safe before 10PM EST, but then anything goes after that (to allow for safe family viewing before the kids go to bed) the networks and the viewers would benefit. Or, with technology today, maybe have a network that airs OTA that is for "mature" audiences only that can take more chances.
And for everyone's sake, I hope The Voice bombs. It's time for this singing fad to end, and I think we might just be approaching that with all the overload in shows catering to it now. Remember the game show craze? Eventually, people get burnt out on it, and they all fail, I hope that happens next season.

Anyway, market forces took hold and sent this steaming pile to the TV graveyard. The show probably got more free exposure from the PTC than from all of the relentless CBS promotion. If the PTC was smart, they wouldn't aid in promoting the "filth" on television, and let the market decide. Networks will only show what the market bares- and most thoughtful adults will take offense to things that are actually offensive (for example, bad comedies starring William Shatner)
Just to show everyone how much attention I paid to this show; I wasn't even aware it was canceled, let alone what night it was on.

I only take issue with people who will see this as a victory against "filth". The show was extremely tame in content and delivery. That made it boring, as it didn't live up to the "hype". The writing and storyline were also horrid. The only thing this was a victory for was ending bad, lazy TV.

By the end of its season, this show was such a non-issue, that I don't think anyone will view this as a victory against "filth", just a victory aginst "horrible writing and acting".

Essentially, folks who most often complain about the 'PC police' quickly forget that they live in a wider, more sophisticated world--and as far as fictional characters, there was no greater example of someone being dragged kicking and screaming into modernity than Archie Bunker. Making complaints that 'we've gotten too PC!' kinda useless in the long term, at least to me.

me cringe. Point admitted though that in modern times at least Fox is generally the one to push the

you look at the rest of their schedule it's clear they are falling into "play is safe" mode as well.

I mentioned Fox being edgy, and Freddy seems to disagree that it still is, but I remembered someone who is not an animated character who can be compared to Archie Bunker because her rants are not simply juvenile and geared toward fraterntity brothers and jocks but Emmy-winning and intelligently written. She is unspeakably cruel and unapologetic. I am referring to Sue Sylvester of "Glee". I cannot stand her. Nevertheless, she keeps winning awards.
