Thanks for asking. I guess you could say I've been given the permanent vacation from 98.5.
Over the years, I've said from time to time on the air that some day, someone would come along and pull the plug on Classic Country. That day was last Wednesday, and that person was Karl Wertzler of Midwest Communications. He used the famous line, "we're going in another direction". Actually, I know that they're not really going in much of a different direction. They're most likely going to be a voice tracked version of HI 99, without the household names like Party Marty, Barry Kent and Frank Rush, and without "Classic Country".
I cannot say that I'm as upset as some might think. Afterall, I've been given approximately 11 years to do what I wanted over a 50,000 fm station. As most of you know, that's unheard of these days.
Most of all, I must thank the listeners and the fans of real Country Music. Then, I must thank HI 99's Barry Kent. When Kent Walls talked with Barry about needing a Classic Country host, Barry thought of me and told me about it. I also must thank David Bailey, the former general manager of WTHI TV and Radio. As an employee of WTHI TV, Mr. Bailey could have prevented me from going across the state line to work at WACF. He could have simply said it was a conflict of interest, but he didn't. And of course, I have to thank John Fisher, who gave me my first job in radio while in high school. I hear that John's now working for a Christian station somewhere here in Indiana. Finally, I cannot forget the late Jack Teiken, who gave me my first real on-air, talk between every record, experience.
It's truly amazing I lasted as long as I did. I can't begin to add up how many general managers and p.d.'s we went through under Key Broadcasting..many of which I never even met!!
Take care. Maybe our signals will cross again.
